10 Reasons to Keep Lemons Stocked in Your Home

Home and Personal Uses

I woke up this morning singing a line from an old commercial from my childhood: "Where do artificial lemons grow? Do they grow in lemons factories?" I cannot even recall what the commercial was advertising.

Nevertheless, lemons were on my mind and so I decided to talk about lemons. I talked with my friends and what they used lemons for and combined with my own personal uses, lemons are very handy to have around.

Lemon uses #1

Did you know that lemon juice contains d- limonene; an antioxidant can reduce the risk of skin cancer. Drinking a cup a tomato juice (I know, an acquired taste, but still healthy-drink fast) mixed with a freshly squeezed lemon juice and you have yourself a skin cancer fighting energy drink!

Lemon uses #2

Lemons are rich with Vitamin C. Lemon juice can increase iron absorption! If you find yourself being anemic- stock up on lemons and asparagus. Lemons help the asparagus do their job of supplying iron. This can help alleviate fatigue.

Lemon uses #3

Lemon juice can be used as an air freshener. Combine equal parts lemon juice and water in a spray bottle and spray around the room. I have found this to work best in kitchens and bathrooms.

Lemon uses #5

Are your sinks looking dingy and the chrome or stainless steel not so shiny anymore? It could be lime deposit. Take one-half of a lemon and rub it over the tarnished looking area. The acidic value works well at cutting away at the lime and before you know it, you have a shiny looking kitchen sink, as well as a citrus smelling one, too.

Lemon uses #6

Wintertime is fast approaching. Is there anything better than to curl up in front of a cozy fire? What if your fireplace emits s a horrible smell? Toss a few lemon peels into the fire and the smell will dissipate.

Lemon uses #7

Last minute guests coming over for dinner? No time for pet odor control? (Frankly, I fund that just rude, if you know someone has pets, give him or her a minimum of a twenty minutes warning.) Cut up a lemon and place rind side down in a bowl and place near the offending odor.

Lemon uses #8

Do your vegetables turn brown? Moreover, you are trying to prepare a fast but wonderful meal for those minute guests. What to do? Simply squeeze a teaspoon of lemon juice in to the cooking water and potatoes, cauliflower, and mushrooms will stay white.

Lemon uses #9

Lemons can be a super power with used in your laundry. Rather than using bleach all the time, soak your delicates with a mixture of lemon juice and baking soda for a half hour prior to washing. Perspiration stains? Rub with equal parts of lemon juice and water.
Mildew or rust stains? Rub a mixture of lemon juice and salt on the stain. Let air-dry outside. Repeat until the stain is gone.

Lemon uses #10

Pamper yourself with lemons. Skip the trip to the manicurist this month. Soak your nails in a bowl mixed with the juice of one-half of a lemon and one cup warm water. After five minutes, remove your hand and push your cuticles back. Then take the lemon peel and rub it back and forth gently against your nails. This will clean and whiten your nails. Lemon juice can also be used as a mouthwash. Take a tablespoon from the green bottle of lemon juice in your refrigerator and swish with it for thirty seconds. No more, as the acidic proprieties can be harmful to tooth enamel.
