10 Reasons People Dislike Dr. Laura Schlessinger

Ashley
Dr. Laura Schlessinger has a radio show each weekday between 12 PM and 3 PM Pacific Time where she gives advice to callers. Topics generally revolve around parenting and relationships. Dr. Laura's conservative stance has gained her a lot of enemies. There are sites dedicated to ripping her to shreds. It's not too hard to figure out why these people feel so much hatred towards her though. It's understandable why the topics Dr. Laura discusses evoke such strong emotions.

1. She doesn't hear the whole question.

Dr. Laura has been described as cutting off guests as soon as she think she has sufficient information. Many times she answers the wrong question or doesn't understand the whole situation.

2. She's made anti-gay statements.

Though Dr. Laura has many homosexual listeners and fans, she has made statements regarding homosexuality being wrong. Comments like these are what ended her short-lived television career. She referred to homosexuality as a "biological error" that needs to be cured. She has spoken out against same-sex parenting. What's most controversial is that she has equated homosexuality with incest and pedophilia.

3. She's made anti-feminist statements.

Even though Dr. Laura was self-proclaimed feminist in the 1970s, her stance sure has changed. She has claimed that feminism is disgusting. This has earned her a lot of enemies, especially feminist bloggers.

4. She's made statements against mixed-faith marriages.

Dr. Laura has made statements about mixed-faith marriages not being acceptable. It has come to light that her parents were of two different faiths. She's had many callers with questions about how to do things in their mixed-faith marriages.

5. She wants you to kick your kids out as soon as you can.

Dr. Laura has claimed that children are the main focus for the first 18 years of their life. As soon as they are 18 years old, they are okay to live on their own and be financially responsible on their own. It's not acceptable to help a child out financially - they should go to college or join the military.

6. She's made mistakes - is she a hypocrite?

Many people have referred to Dr. Laura as a hypocrite for several reasons. For one, there are many nude pictures of her surfacing around the internet. Not only that, but these pictures were taken when she allegedly had an affair with a married man. She's also been divorced (while she had a child with that man) and has "shacked up" with a boyfriend. This leaves many to wonder if she's really the person who should be giving advice about these issues that she now claims to be disgusting.

7. She's not a psychologist, psychiatrist, or even a counselor.

Dr. Laura did not study psychology or psychiatry in college. She studied physiology. While she is still a doctor, many feel that her title is deceptive. She's not an expert on the human mind, and she's not a mental health professional. It also appears as if Dr. Laura's counseling license has long since expired.

8. She places on blame on the woman for a cheating husband.

It wasn't long ago that Laura Schlessinger made comments about cheating spouses on Today. She stated that if a husband cheats on a wife, it's because the wife didn't provide him with the intimacy and sex that he needed, and she shouldn't be surprised that he looked elsewhere.

9. Her short-lived television career was shady.

A researcher for the Dr. Laura talk show on TV appeared on two occasions as a "guest" in two different situations. There has never been a comment made about this.

10. She speaks out about military wives.

Dr. Laura has made comments about military wives not being grateful for the work their husbands are doing overseas. She stated that military men need "warrior wives" at home that don't complain. This caused a spark with some callers who called to ask for help about dealing with problems at home while their husbands were in Iraq.

I guess last week she brought the toll up to eleven. As if I needed another reason.

Most of the Dr. Laura haters have never actually listened to her for more than a few (often out of context) quotes. She is NOT perfect, she is not God, but she has helped MORE people in an hour show than the haters will help in a lifetime! So often she tells a caller something that sounds mean. But she tells people what they NEED to do to improve their lives, NOT what sounds pleasant or what they might want to hear.
Finally, a hypocrite is someone who is doing something wrong and telling others not to do it. She doesn't have a perfect past, (who does?) but that shouldn't prevent her from giving advice now.

I threw up a little when I heard there were nude pics of her. I guess rule 34 does exist.
She's a Jewish Fred Phelps anit she? I listened to her a few times. She's abrasive, loud, and downright nasty. Her stance on gays is what made me hate her.

You proved that Dr. Laura is human with a past and hosts a radio call in talk show that has time constraints. Moreover, you showcase that she opposes what currently passes as the feminist movement, has strong controversial personal opinions, and is not afraid to voice them. I get that. I just wish you had stated why YOU dislike her.

I've had the misfortune of listening to Dr. Laura. The woman is a hateful myopic narcisistic rhetoricist. She hears what she wants to hear, sees what she wants to see, and is all to eager to assign blame to anyone but the responsible party. For example, did you know that our current economic woes are actually Sen Obama's fault? She's hyper-partisan, much like the other political nuts on the radio - except, unlike the others, she is incapable of articulating her views in anything more meaningful than absolutist bumper-sticker phrases. She also seems incapable of making sense - she has often said that if a husband beats his wife, the wife must deserve it, and many other similar stupidities. Knowing her history, it seems she is nothing more than an egotistical self-hater - like the other Cons on the radio, but far less intelligent.
