10 Sidekicks that Are Cooler Than the Hero

Lee Andrew Henderson
Why was the concept of a sidekick invented? Maybe it was so the hero would have help defeating the bad guy? Maybe it was for comic relief? Nobody knows for sure but I think the reason the sidekick was added is because some people just don't like the main hero. Sometimes a sidekick is actually cooler than the hero and that is the case with the following ten examples.

10) Thumper, "Bambi"
It's been a while since "Bambi" has graced my television but when I saw it as a child I remember thinking that Thumper was badass (well as badass as a five year can imagine a cartoon rabbit in a Disney movie to be).

9) Madmartigan, "Willow"
Doc Holliday from "Tombstone" came close to making the list but then it was decided that Doc Holliday wouldn't take to kindly to being called a sidekick. Solution! Choose another Val Kilmer character!

8) Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, "Harry Potter"
There's nothing wrong at all with Harry Potter and Daniel Radcliffe should have a nice career ahead of him but Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger stole the show most of the time.

7) HK-47, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
When this topic for an article came to me I thought surely there is a character somewhere in the Star Wars universe to include. One suggestion was R2-D2, which I guess would work, but I never really thought of him as a sidekick. Another suggestion was Chewbacca but suggesting Chewie is better than Han is silly. Finally I remember that meatbag hating HK-47 from Knights of the Old Republic.

6) Barret Wallace, Final Fantasy XII
The term "sidekick" is tough to determine. If any character from Final Fantasy that isn't the main character is a sidekick then I could have made this entire list out of Final Fantasy characters. I settled for simply using the best character from the Final Fantasy series that fit the sidekick role the best.

5) Hurley, Lost
Hurley was a sidekick to almost every castaway on the island at some point during the course of Lost and he was always cooler than his leader. Okay, maybe not Sawyer, but he was definitely cooler than Charlie.

4) Agent 99, Get Smart
Maxwell Smart is one of my favorite television characters of all-time but if you gave me the chance to spend time with Maxwell Smart or Agent 99 then it is no contest.

3) The Scooby Gang, Buffy the Vampire Slayer
"The Scooby Gang" was the nickname given to Buffy's sidekicks. Willow was probably the favorite of most but Xander, Giles and Oz all had plenty of memorable moments as well.

2) Luigi, Super Mario Bros.
Mario is such a spotlight hog. We all know that Luigi is far superior to Mario but Mario is just holding him back. I mean, I played Super Mario Bros. 2! Luigi could jump higher than anybody! Mario was just average at everything!

1) Kato, Green Hornet
Kato is the epitome of sidekicks cooler than the hero. Kato is Bruce Lee for goodness sake!
