More often than not, we do not switch off our monitors even after we have shut down our computers. Keep the monitor and the computer switched off when you are not using them. Start practicing this even when at work.
You will help save some more power for the world.
2) Light bulbs:
You must have seen compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs being advertised all the time. You may have even used them at times. As a power-saving measure, start using the CFL light bulbs as much as you can.
If you are thinking they are more expensive than the regular bulbs, the benefits of the CFL bulbs will prove much more cost-effective in the long turn by the amount of power they will save.
3) Air Conditioner:
Set the temperature at the minimum or maximum best you are comfortable with, depending on the season. Try not to set it at too high or too low temperatures. Setting the air conditioner at reasonable temperatures helps save a lot of energy.
4) Washing Machines:
Do you use your washing machine as often as you want? Do you use your washing machine even when there are not enough clothes to wash? Minimize the number of washes by washing full load of clothes every time.
5) Television:
Take off the power plug of your television set when not using it. This may not sound a big deal but this tiny step
will help save power.
6) Geysers:
Keep the geyser thermostat at the minimum heat. You do not need to heat the water at a very high temperature or for too long.
7) Refrigerator:
Bring hot food to room temperatures before putting it into the refrigerator. You can also save power by taking cold or frozen food out of the refrigerator much before the mealtime, thereby saving power in heating it.
8)Mobile phones:
Switch of the charger of the mobile phone, once the phone is fully charged. Charge your mobile phone mostly during the day, since you know how much time it takes to charge the phone, you can switch it off as soon as the mobile phone is fully charged. Many times we keep our mobile phones for charging at night and switch them off only when we wake up in the morning-this is a bad practice, since after the battery is fully charged, charging it further is only waste of power.
9) Car AC:
For an air-conditioner equipped car, pull up the windows of your car before switching on the air-conditioner.
10) Car fuel consumption:
Obeying the speed limit saves fuel. So does maintaining a constant speed. Rapid acceleration and braking can decrease fuel economy by 33%. Always drive at economy speed on top gear and stop your engine while waiting for signal. Driving with your foot on the brake pedal can increase the fuel consumption by as much as 35%.
Regular maintenance of your car improves your fuel efficiency significantly, and hence you consume less fuel for the same distance travelled. For example, a clean air filter can improve fuel efficiency by as much as 10%, proper tyre alignment can save upto 10% and properly tuned engine can improve mileage by 4%.
