10 Sites for Online Poets

Christine Senter
Poetscape

A great site for both emerging and experienced poets. This site offers an alphabetized list of paying poetry markets. They also offer a free newsletter, articles, poetry contests, and even spotlight a featured poet which appears on their website for a full two months.

The Belvedere Room Forum

The Belvedere Room is a wonderful group of poets coming together for the love of poetry. They offer daily threads, poetry for the young, a workshop for poets who need to work on their technique or style, and a special place to have your work critiqued. Other rooms include a place to announce any poetry books you may have either published on your own, or have been included in. There is even a special room to post your poetic memorials.

PoetryBang

An extensive site offering everything from original poems to forums to blogs. This site is a great place for all poets, no matter the experience level. Submit your own work or read the work of other poets. Need a little help, check out the extras page which includes links to dictionaries, encyclopedias, and even an online rhyming dictionary. There is a little something for everyone here.

Poetry Castle

Another poetry forum of impressive proportions. There seems to be a room for every style and type of poetry out there. There are also rooms dedicated to poetic challenges, how-to's, and even a section for poetry dedicated to each specific month. The resources on this page seem almost endless.

Poetry Plaza

This is an International poetry site, featuring the works of Asian and Eastern Indian poets, as well as American. Though this site isn't all that extensive, they do have a bookstore where you can buy books of poetry, an event guide announcing upcoming poetry readings, and a small list of links to other poetry sites.

AllPoetry

A very well designed site offering poets a relaxed atmosphere in which to display their work, as well as read the work of other poets. The submitted poems are listed by genre as well as a full list, giving the reader his/her choice of how to find that certain poem. There are also links to contests, forums, groups, and even a few sites on learning poetry.

Kids Poetry

This is a fun little site for kids of all ages. There are poems from both well known and unknown poets, as well as links to sites that teach children the different styles of poetry and even poetry lesson plans. This is a super site.

International Poetry Sites

A small list of International sites put together by the University of Toronto. Includes sites in Africa, the United States, Egypt, and even Turkey. They also offer links to sites of poetic songs, visual poetry, and a couple other general listings.

Sonnets Central

A quaint site dedicated to the sonnet. Read the works of great British and Canadian poets, or sign up and submit your own. They also offer a forum called the Sonnet Board, and a list of links to other sites that deal with sonnets. Be sure to stop by and sign the guestbook before you leave.

Poets and Writers

One of the most comprehensive site on the Internet. PW offers everything from grants and funding, to contests and forums. No matter which style of poetry you enjoy, you will find something at this site that will meet your needs. PW also offers a print and online version of their magazine, though there are certain things you can find in one venue, that you won't find in the other. This is a one stop shop for all poets; and writers.
