Apply Early

It is important to apply for Fafsa as early as you can after January 1st. This will help maximize the amount of money that can be awarded. The Fafsa award process is pretty much first come first serve. The longer you wait to fill out your application, the less money there is available to award. Now you do have a couple months before you should really start to worry, but it would be smart to get it done before the actual deadline on September 21, 2010 at midnight.

The Number 23

Do not leave number 23 of the Fafsa application blank. This is the question regarding drug conviction. If you leave this question blank, it will cause delays within your entire Fafsa application process.

PIN Number

Make sure to apply for a pin number so that you can use it as your electronic signature. This pin number is beneficial because it makes it possible for you to return to your application at a later time with ease.

No Need for Copies

There is no need to send in a copy of your tax returns with your application because they will contact you with a request for information if it is necessary.

Pre-Application Worksheet

Completing the pre-application worksheet will help finishing the application faster. To complete this worksheet, you should have these documents handy:

• Drivers License

• Social Security Card/ Number

• Tax Return Information

• W-2 Form

Use Correct Names

Sometimes we get so used to using nicknames for people close to us that we forget to use real names on important forms. This may seem silly, but it happens. When filling out the application, make sure to use names as they are shown on social security cards. Also make sure the correct names are put in the correct sections on the application.

One Fafsa a Year

Only one Fafsa application is necessary for completion each year even if you are applying for more than one school. You can request for your Fafsa to be sent to designated schools.

Which Parent?

If parents are divorced or separated, the parent who is responsible for completing the Fafsa is the one you lived with the most during the past 12 months.

Say Yes!

When it comes to work study and other types of financial aid, it is best to answer 'yes' to the questions regarding those opportunity. You may not feel like you need them at the moment, but it doesn't hurt or obligate you to answer yes. It actually keeps your options open in the future.

Federal School Codes

Take the time and research the federal school code(s) for the school or schools you consider attending. You can find this information online by going to the school website or just doing a broad search for the school code. This is necessary to complete the application and very good to have handy.
