Step 1: Identify your market. Take a while to browse EBay and search for products that are consistent sellers. Take notes of this. You can always search by lowest price or hottest selling items in the EBay search engines. This research can be invaluable for future decisions on what you buy and sell.
Step 2: Keep an eye on the competition. For any product you wish to list, type it into the basic search and take a look at the top listings. Notice flaws or anything in their listing text that you might be able to improve upon. Don't underestimate the importance of the minor details. A subtitle, better photo, or more informative description can be the difference that will give you the edge.
Step 3: Establish a niche product. Do extensive Google research for drop shippers and suppliers and compare their prices to other EBayers. If you find prices that are consistently less than most EBay sellers, you're set. As a beginner, having low prices has to be your main hook.
Step 4: Start out small. There is no magic bullet theory for EBay success. Don't start out investing thousands, just play around with it for awhile. If you have some crazy ideas, go for it. EBay is one of the least expensive businesses to start, so it gives you the luxury to learn from trial and error.
Step 5: Test products and repeat. After you've tried a number of different strategies and you've found one that brings you success, don't be afraid to run with. Some of the most successful EBay businesses are niche marketers. If you've found it, do it exclusively or at least focus most of your attention on it. Use EBay Turbo Lister to list 100's, even thousands at one time.
Step 6: Draw up a business plan. For EBay your plan doesn't have to be formal like it would be for starting a brick and mortar store. Just outline the market opportunity you've spotted, you're overall strategy, the strengths and weaknesses of your plan and your current budget. Use it as a personal guide, not as something to submit to venture capitalists.
Step 7: Start investing money and expanding your business: at this stage you should be stepping to the plate and preparing to swing for the fences. Buy bulk loads of your product right from the reseller section in EBay and increase your listings and sales goals on a weekly basis.
Step 8: Officialize. Once you've made a few thousand dollars on EBay, hire a lawyer to go over incorporating your business to make it official. That way, your business liabilities won't be attached to your personal assets and you will look official as you network with business cards, advertisements, and wholesale suppliers.
Step 9: Automation: at this point you will find that your listings are repetitive and you're spending a great deal of time shipping. Time is money and you can use EBay's automation software to automatically list, relist and do your e-mails for you so you can spend more time researching product niches to mine for more EBay gold. EBay can also provide you with packaging products and pick up your products from your doorstep.
Step 10: Don't give up: you will have to fail to succeed. If you never give up, you will inevitably learn from mistakes and figure out how to succeed. It is possible for anyone to become wealthy on EBay starting with the sale of one product so expect some frustration but fearlessly forge on.
