Counting the Pros and Cons of the particular Job.
When looking for a job you need to make certain that you have as much information about the particular job you are applying for. How much is their starting pay? How high is their turn over rate? How will your hours work with your availability? Do they have benefits? What are their requirements? Will you have to purchase a new wardrobe for this particular Job? Will the wages you are making be enough to give you a decent profit after your financial output to be able to work there? (Gas, clothing, specialized equipment you have to supply, and Union Costs etc.) There are times when we are so desperate for a job that we are willing to take the first thing that comes along. If you are able to make choices and pick a decent option, make sure you are going to think ahead instead of regret your decision later.
Does your personality fit the type of job you are applying for?
If you are not a friendly or even remotely outgoing People Person you may not want to apply as a Customer Service Clerk. If you have little or no patients, being a Sales Clerk in a Major Retail Store may not be the best option. If you don't like Children, you should probably stay away from working in a Child Care Facility. Those who are not self motivated at all should not be put in positions that requires for them to give them-selves a push to work. With other words make certain that your personality matches up with the job you are applying for. Some things can be learned, but an ingrained personality is hard to change.
Dress to impress not to entice when looking for a Job.
Unless you are planning to audition for a play or want to work as an Adult Entertainer in the newest hot show in town, you may want to put your best foot forward. Which means keep your Cleavage (as lovely as it may be and as much as the Manager may dream of it later) covered please and for you guys too tight or so faded that the Manager can see your goods Jeans are not appropriate either? Rule of Thumb, if you can't wear it to visit your Grandparents in you may want to change. Business Casual is always good.
Don't overdress or try to be too smart for your own good.
You don't need to wear a 3 Piece Suit to apply to be a Burger Turner at McDonalds and you don't need to give a citation at your local Grocery Store. There is a difference between being intelligent and simply too smart. Don't try to "out do" your Interviewer or the even the Person handing you the Application. Remember, that subdued Politeness goes a long way. You only have one chance to make a good impression. Even the lowest person in that company on the Totem Pole can easily be asked what they thought of you when it comes to deciding if you or the person next to you gets the job.
Be familiar with simple Job hunting Jargon.
If you hear "we will call you if we have an opening", then you can be pretty sure that you didn't get the job. This is just another version of the "Don't call us, we call you!" way of doing business. A polite way of saying that they are not looking for what you have to offer. Yes, take it personal and if it happens too often you may want to review what you are doing wrong. If the Manager is not available, ask for the name of the hiring Person in Charge. Thank the person helping you and make certain to get his or her Name. A simple Trick and nice way to do this is. "You have been so much help and were so nice, what was your name again? " Someone who you know by name is less likely to throw the application in the Waste Basket, but will more and likely turn it over to the correct Person. Make sure to get the Phone Number and check on your application about 5 Business Days after you have handed it in. This will show interest on your behalf and give them a chance to either schedule an appointment with you or give you the understanding that you can cross this lead of the list.
Be Scent cautious!
When you go out Job hunting you never know if you may get lucky and score an Interview with the Manager right then and there. Always be ready for that possibility. Make sure you breath is clean and you don't wear any overpowering Perfume or Cologne. Remember just because it smells good to you and your lover likes it, doesn't mean everyone around you will be thrilled to smell you miles away. Also remember that some People are allergy to perfumes. A soft clean smell is best for job hunting.
Turn your Cell Phone off when going inside a Business!
Please remember that other people are already working there and taking a call in the middle of trying to talk to someone about working for them, makes it look as if you are really not that interested. Put your Cell Phone on vibrate and call the person back when you are outside.
Leave your kids and Spouse at home!
Not only does it look horrible when you bring your entire Family with you on a job hunt, but is boring for those you love as well. I can guarantee you that those in charge will not appreciate watching as your Kids run crazy in the halls or decide to find out who can scream the loudest. It also makes the impression that child care may end up being an issue for you and that you could possibly be less then reliable due to this.
Avoid the busiest hours to talk to the Manager.
If you are planning on speaking to a Manager or person in charge you want to make certain you avoid stopping in at the busiest hours of their day. The Person will be less likely to feel charitable towards you during those hours. Better to ask when a good time would be and come back later.
Remember your Manners and be patient!
Please and thank you are not outdated words you should be forgetting. Believe it or not good manners can open a lot of doors that would otherwise stay closed to you. Remember when your Mom taught you not to fidget when talking to someone? That is very good advice even while looking for a job. Not only does it show that you are nervous, but can be extremely annoying to may of us. Remember that the People there are working and may not have time to jump up and help you just because you have come in. Rather be patient and observe the way business is conducted. How long does it take before someone is noticing you and letting you know that someone will be with you shortly? How do the Workers interact with each other? Is the place clean? Do the workers seem stressed out or appear to be "normal" for being in a working mode? Sometimes waiting can have a lot of benefits for you as well.
There are many more points that could be pointed out to you, but to me those were always the most important to heat. Remember to bring a few black or blue ink Pens with you, have your ID and Social Security Card with you as well, just incase you get a chance to interview and maybe even get lucky enough to be hired. Make sure you have plenty of time when looking for a job. Remember this is not going to be on your Time Schedule, but those you are asking for the job.
