10 Things to Consider Before a Bathroom Remodel

Do you have a dated bathroom? You know, the one with the olive green sink toilet and matching bathtub. Then stay tuned for my top 10 things to consider before doing a bathroom remodel.

#1 - What is your reason for remodeling? Are you bored with the look and want to make a few simple changes, or are you looking to sell your home and want to get top dollar? Real estate experts say that a bathroom remodel is a good investment in terms of return on investment.

#2 - Can any of this work be done by you or your friends and family or do you need to hire a contractor to get the job done? It all depends on how much of a remodel you plan to handle. For example, removing wallpaper is not difficult if you use DIFF wallpaper removing gel. I did my bathroom and many other rooms with this system. It is easy and no fumes. Wipe the walls down with warm water and vinegar and then you are ready to prime (use the Zinsser 1-2-3 primer) and paint. Changing faucets and fixtures is fairly easy as well.

#3 - How much is the entire bathroom remodel going to cost? We all know this depends on how much work you are planning to do and how much of it you will need to hire a contractor to do. In some cases, not all contractors may be able to get better pricing on tubs, toilets and fixtures.

#4.- This may be a good time to consider going green. There are water efficient toilet systems and new fixtures that allow you to consume less water in your showerhead as well as the faucet. Cork or bamboo flooring could be used instead of the traditional tile. The upfront cost may be a bit more, but the long term savings will outweigh this cost.

#5 - How long will the project take? You will definitely need to know which friend or family's house will be able for shower usage if this is the only full bath you have in your home.

#6 - Be reasonable! While shopping for tubs and faucets and fixtures, you will find some beautiful colors and finishes. They may look great, but on a day to day basis, it may not be effective. Consider your current family structure and your lifestyle. Also consider the resale of your home, neutral colors resell best. You can be wild and creative with your accents as they are less expensive and can be switched out easily.

#7 - Before thinking of structural changes make sure you have the space, money and time. These types of changes require inspections and could lead to remodeling delays.

#8 - Consider the style of your home and ensure the remodeling will suit the style of the home. It should add character, not confusion.

#9 - While planning a new layout, consider traffic pattern and access points to ensure that people are not running into each other, Ensure sufficient clearance is allowed for any doors that may lead into the bathroom or linen closets.

#10 - Take time to plan ahead so you do most of your work upfront. This will allow for minimal loss of time and money.

Enjoy a quite bubble bath when the entire bathroom remodel is complete.
