1. Take a free class online and learn a new skill. This article about finding free online computer classes explains where to find these free classes.
2. Take your dog for a walk and while you're at it, grab your spouse and kids and all go for walks.
3. Plant a flower garden in your yard or a vegetable garden. Even if you have a small space you can still make it work great. Put a porch swing at your home making it cozy so everyone can feel invited to sit and visit.
4. Sit and watch the sun go down with your family. They say it takes 60 seconds for the sun to go down once it hits the horizon I wonder if it is really true.
5. Get a telescope and a book on astronomy and the stars. Teach your kids about the stars and take them outside at night to look at the stars.
6. Volunteer your time to an organization that you feel fulfilled. Television can leave you with an empty feeling after watching it for hours, volunteering your time is the opposite. You will feel great after helping someone.
7. Buy a bike and go on bike rides with your family. Pack a backpack with snacks and stop and have a picnic. You can meet after work and you get the kids from daycare at the local park and eat dinner there then stay till dark. After all without Television you don't need to rush home to watch anything.
8. Help your child write a book about your family. Let them write the book and draw the pictures. If you make the booklet with blank pages they will be inspired to write, get copies of family photos so they can cut them out the paste them in the book and write about them.
9. Use this time to organize your garage, shed or other projects that have been neglected. Gather the stuff that you no longer want and sell it at a yard sale. This will give you money to do other family outings.
10. Just do nothing. Sit, relax enjoy being by yourself or enjoy time with your family holding conversations. It seems that no one has time to relax anymore. Just being outside watching your kids play is one great way to relax after a long stressful day.
Without being a couch potato you can do many things and have fun. The kids being active will help them beat the risk of childhood obesity and it will make you healthier also. If you can't break away from the television start slowly, choose one day a week that you don't turn on the TV. You may find that you really like it.

Great article. Some people watch wayyy too much Tv. If you're at least going to watch it, tape it so you can forward through the commercials.
I couldn't agree more. I don't watch much tv and life is a little richer...with books!
