When you move into a college to study for your University degree, there are a few often overlooked items that you don't want to forget if you can avoid it. This is a list of items that you may take for granted, but will appreciate during those early weeks at College while you get settled in and establish your room.
- An alarm clock. You want to make sure that you get to your classes on time, and that you wake up early enough to get breakfast.
- A tea towel. It's nice to be able to wash and dry your own glasses and things, rather than needing to use a communal rag.
- A power board. Chances are you're going to only have two power sockets in your room, and if you want to be able to plug in your phone charger, laptop, lamp and perhaps an appliance or two, you're going to need a power board, and probably an extension lead too.
- A laptop. Make sure your laptop is modern enough to open the latest editions of word documents, PDFs and get onto the internet. There's no point taking a laptop with you if it can't do what you need it to do.
- A doorstopper. College rooms can be a little stuffy at times, and it's nice to be able to have your door half open, so that people know you're in there but you're not constantly distracted by strangers walking by.
- A means to stick posters, photos or notes to your walls, roof and door. This makes your room more personalised and will help you feel more at home. It will also help your friends remember which room is yours.
- Clothes for all temperatures are also highly recommended, because if you assume that the weather is going to be hot you're almost certain to get too cold.
- A clothes rack is also a great idea. Whether it's the sort that hang on the back of your door, the sort that hang from a pole or the kind that can be folded away when not in use, it's comforting to know that your clothes are drying in the privacy of your own room and not being observed or stolen by anyone.
- A set of cups or glasses will allow you be to be a little classier that drinking straight out of the bottle. For college, I'd recommend you seek out some unbreakable plastic ones.
- A bucket makes transporting wet clothes from the laundry much easier, and can be used to catch drips or carry around other objects. It may seem like an odd idea, but it's really very practical.
