The first thing you want to do is get all your important information together so you can fill out the FAFSA online. Some of these items include social security card, tax information, work information, tax records, parent tax information and also anything relating to income or personal information.
In order to fill out the FAFSA on the Internet, you will need to get a pin number so you can electronically sign your forms. Your mom or dad will also need a pin number so that they can sign their parts of the form electronically as well. You should sign up for the pin at least three weeks before you plan on filling out the FAFSA online.
Make sure you have the right browser to complete your FAFSA online or else you might get an error message when you try to fill out the form. The information on the website will tell you how to complete the FAFSA using a certain web browser and will also tell you which versions of the browser is supported.
When you fill out the FAFSA online, you should set aside about two hours to complete the form. Many people who are completing their FAFSA for the first time can complete the form within an hour. Make sure you do set aside some extra time though to go back and make sure everything on the form is entered correctly and that nothing is left blank. You should also be a in quiet environment with no distractions that could cause you to mess up the FAFSA form.
Answer all the questions on the online FAFSA form truthfully, including those about drug convictions and household income. If you do not answer these questions honestly, it could be considered perjury and you could wind up getting a criminal charge for this. Answer the questions honestly because they will cross-reference the information you put with the information on your record and sooner or later they will find out the truth. Being honest will also help you find appropriate funds and grants you could be eligible for.
If you do not know the answer to a question on the online FAFSA form you can just put zero in the field. Do not leave any question blank on the form because this could delay your FAFSA form submission and make it harder for you to find the correct financial aid. There is also a number you can call that is set up to answer any questions you have when you are filling out the FAFSA form online and that number is 1-800-433-3243.
If you come from a divorced household, you should only use the tax information from the parent you live with. The only time you need to use both your mom and your dad on your FAFSA is if they are still married or they filed their income taxes together. You should use the financial information of the parent you live with to fill out your FAFSA because that is considered household income and needs to be reported on the FAFSA form online.
Before you submit your FAFSA you filled out online, you need to print a copy of the completed form for your own records. Make sure that you print the form and keep it in a safe place just in case you need to get it out later if there is a question or problem with your submitted information. It is also a good idea to put the finished FAFSA form on your computer as another way to keep a copy of it handy. If you have a flash drive then you can store the completed FAFSA on that to ensure you can easily come back to it if needed. Make sure you have a copy of the completed form and also give a copy to your mom or dad so they can keep it somewhere safe as well.
When you complete the FAFSA online, you do not need to mail off copies of your tax information. You should only mail copies of your tax information if the school calls you and asks for that information. Otherwise, do not mail off your tax information because it is usually not needed by the school or the government since they have access to those records.
When you fill out the FAFSA online you should also know that you need the most current financial information available. If you complete the FAFSA early in the year, you should be using the tax forms from the previous year to fill out the financial information. Using the most current financial information will help your FAFSA get accepted sooner and will also give you the most reliable information on grants and other money you are eligible for.
