10 Tips for Installing a New Flush Valve on Your Toilet

The toilet is one of the most often used items in a home. It does the dirty task of removing waste from your home and does so in an efficient manner. Modern toilets have very few pieces making them extremely reliable. However, even with their simple design, a toilet can still refuse to work properly at times. When a toilet is not functioning as expected, repair is usually needed immediately. Luckily, the repairs are typically easy, inexpensive, and utilize only common tools.

One of the main components of any toilet is the flush valve. The flush valve is the assembly that allows the water from the tank into the bowl allowing the toilet to properly flush. Most flush valves consists of only a few pieces and are easily replaced. Once you have determined that you need a new flush valve, follow these simple tips below to make the installation and future function of your new flush valve flawless.

1. Always replace parts with OEM or Original Equipment Manufacturer parts. This assures that the parts function as intended.

2. Inspect the old flapper for damage which may have been caused by toilet bowl cleaners.

3. Remove any in tank toilet bowl cleaners as they will degrade your new flapper and flush valve assembly over time.

4. Ensure that you have properly seated your new flush on the attachment points. Most flush valves or flappers click into place.

5. Adjust the chain tension properly. A chain that is too tight will cause the toilet to constantly run. One that is too loose may not allow the flapper to open fully while flushing.

6. Always turn off the water when performing any repair to a toilet.

7. Inspect the seat were the flush valve sits. Look for any damage to the seal or porcelain. If damage, replace the seal. If the porcelain is damaged, you will need a new toilet.

8. After installing the new valve, turn the water on and allow the tank to fill completely. Check for leaks and listen for that water running sound.

9. Flush the toilet while watching inside the tank. Make sure that the chain does not interfere with operation of the flush valve.

10. Inspect the inside of your toilet tank on a regular basis to avoid unexpected repairs. Look for any damage or worn parts and note the operation of all moving parts within.

Replacing your flush valve is a simple task that task a few minutes to perform. With the tips above, you will be able to do this task yourself and complete it in a proper manner. Following these simple steps will get your toilet back in working order in no time.
