Tip #1
Refuse to complain to others about your job situation, even if you hate your current position. Take on the mindset of a leader and avoid becoming a gossip or office troll.
Tip #2
See every project to the end. Even if you believe you may be advancing, do not be content to hand off a big project to move up. If you are involved in an important event or task, be persistent and remain on target.
Tip #3
Think like a senior officer or vice president. Begin looking at the big picture of the company rather than how a new rule or system affects just your department. Have a "whole company" mindset.
Tip #4
Be quiet unless you know what you are talking about. During a meeting, do not venture to guess, but rather give facts only. Be that person who is dependable and accurate. The old adage, "Better to let others think you are a fool than open your mouth and prove it," holds a lot of wisdom.
Tip #5
Involve yourself in real training. Certificates look good on a resume, but real knowledge is priceless.
Tip #6
Show up before your boss arrives and after he or she leaves as often as possible. Use this extra time for working rather than socializing.
Tip #7
Be customer friendly. Go the extra mile for every customer and refuse to abandon even the most difficult client. Customer satisfaction is important to leadership. Avoid handing off a tough situation to someone else. Take responsibility for problems if they land in your lap.
Tip #8
Deliver all reports on time. Always fact check and double-check numbers and statements. Be reliable and accurate in all areas.
Tip #9
Get to know how the competition is beating the company. Understand the marketplace and where your company fits in the larger picture. Think about solutions that will improve the company's standings in the market.
Tip #10
Have a personal one-year and five-year plan written and available. Include the promotion and other important details in your plan. Have your plan ready to share with any senior staff member who may wish to see it. Keep extra copies available. Give one to HR to have on hand.
