10 Tips for the New School Year

Overcoming Empty Nest Syndrome

Tamara
Well it's almost that time for the little ones to go back to school, and some parents have trouble finding out how to deal with an empty house. Whether it was a chaotic summer or a fun filled one, having the silence after the kids go back to school can be a little depressing. Now it's time for you to fill the day with productive events to get you back on track for the school year. Even though you may be bummed; take advantage of the time you have for yourself.

1. New House Projects: Having the younger ones around makes it hard to complete some house projects that you've had in mind. Whether it's cleaning out the hall closet or painting a wall. This is the perfect time to get it done. There has to be something you can accomplish around the house, so take a look at what can be done and start making it a weekly or daily goal to complete a task. It's much easier to get it done without the kids.

2. Exercise: When you've spent 3 months entertaining others, I'm sure it's taken a toll on the time you've had for yourself. To fill the time and to get the happy endorphins to kick in, go take a walk or do your favorite work out video. Set a goal on what you might want to achieve to better yourself. Even if you don't want to lose weight or get in shape, you can always do it to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

3. Lunch with a Friend: Call up a good friend and have lunch. Having the company may help you overcome the silence around the house. Even if you are unable to meet up with a friend, call one up and chat on the phone for a while.

4. Run Errands: There is always something that a house hold needs, so make a list of items you need, and make a day for shopping.

5. Read a Book: Sometimes reading a good book can fill the time quicker than anything else. Go to the local library or bookstore and grab a novel that catches your eye. When the kids have left for the day, kick back in your favorite chair and start reading.

6. Take on a Part Time Job: You may not have the opportunity to pursue a full blown career, but taking on a part time job can help you get out of the house, make a little extra money, and meet new people. Sometimes being in the workplace can be comforting enough to keep you from feeling down. When you get home you can look forward to having the little ones come home from school.

7. Take on a Hobby: When you've been taking care of others all day long it doesn't leave much time for the hobbies you enjoy. So if you're into painting, drawing, crafts, scrapbooking etc. now is the time to start back up.

8. Volunteer: As parents we are so used to caring for others, and being alone can be lonely. Start volunteering at a local hospital, pet clinic, retirement center, school, etc. Feeling the satisfaction from helping others can cure your school year blues.

9. Join a Club: There are so many clubs out there even ones for stay at home moms. Go online and see what they have for your community. You may find something that may interest you. This will help you to meet others that have the same interests.

10. Go back to school: You can never learn enough. Go to your community college, and see what courses they have for the year. While the kids are learning, so can you.

There is always something that can keep you busy. Just keep your mind open.
