10 Tips for Stylish Layering Techniques for Winter

Barb Webb
Layering clothing is practical throughout the year, but perhaps most practiced in the winter months. Moving from cold outdoor activities to cozy nights by the fireside can be a challenge. Bulky sweaters that keep you insulated outside can easily turn into sweat-inducing ovens.

You can beat the holiday chill and still look stylish using these simple tips:

Keep the cloth close to your skin. For the first layer of any outfit, you want a snug fit. This will help you from adding bulk to outfits, but will also keep you warm. For inner layers, Cabelas online suggests "materials are often made of polyester, polypropylene, silk, or a mix of synthetic and natural insulating and wicking fibers, like polyester and wool" as good choices.

Stay clear of cotton on the inside. Cotton is a wonderful fiber, but not the best choice for inner layering as it tends to hold moisture and may stay damp if you begin to sweat. Used as a top layer, however, cotton works well.

Vary your necklines. To create an exciting look, use shirts of varient colors and necklines, placing the lower neckline over the higher one. This creates a lot of interest at the neckline, which of course, draws interest to your radiant face!

Layer up glamour for holiday parties. If you have a drop-dead-gorgeous dress you'll want to cover it up with something equally stunning if you get cold. Keep the ratty-tat sweater in the closet and invest in a snazzy coordinate to keep you covered.

More is sometimes better. If you are participating in outdoor sports or will be moving from indoor to outdoor activities constantly, it's far better to over-layer than to under layer. You can always remove layers but if you don't have enough, you may find yourself miserably cold!

Jazz things up with accessories. You may feel like a marshmallow bundled up in all your winter layers on, but you can still look great with the right accessories. A stylish winter hat wrap and matching mittens add flair to any winter look. A sophisticated pair of boots (with no-slip soles, of course!) will also add miles of fashion pizzazz to your look.

Pull on a pair of tights. Leggings come in all measure of thickness and styles. They'll all keep you warm and looking fashionable when wearing skirts and dresses. Add a knee high boot for extra warmth and protection from the elements.

Live it up in long johns. Long johns have withstood the test of time because, well, they work! You can even find up dated styles and fabrics at shops like Cuddl Duds.

Wear your scarf indoors. Reluctant to pull off the super cute winter scarf you've been wearing with your outer layers? Don't! Flip the pages of any fashion magazine and you'll see that scarves can be stylish indoors and out.

Double up your socks. The older I get, the more my footsies seem to feel the cold. To cure this, I like to wear a thin pair of socks under a thicker pair-works like a charm and doesn't add any bulk.
