Burl Ives. A well known folk singer and song writer, Burl Ives' well known Christmas songs include Snow For Johnny (released in 1964), Have a Holly Jolly Christmas, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and Silver and Gold, and Frosty the Snowman. Burl Ives' lighthearted songs continue to delight listeners during the Christmas season.
Elvis Presley. Who could forget the King at Christmas? Elvis was at the height of his career in the 1950's and 1960s, with crazy, screaming crowds at his many concerts. By far, his most well known Christmas song was Blue Christmas, a real tear jerker. If Every Day Was Like Christmas and Santa Bring My Baby Back were, and continue to be, favorites during the holiday season.
Newsong. This Christian group hit the Number 1 Billboard song on January 06, 2001 with their Christmas song titled Christmas Shoes. The popularity of this sad song continues to grow over the last 10 years. A song about a boy looking to buy a pair of shoes for his dying mother, it has been produced into a movie and sung at Christmas plays. A truly moving song for the Christmas season, Newsong sings this song with powerful emotion.
Willie Nelson. Texas born singer and songwriter, Willie Nelson is known as a country singer, and popular in the 1970's and 1980's. He had many hit songs, including Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain, and won a grammy in 1980 for On the Road Again. He is a pick on my list of Christmas singers for his moving Christmas song, Pretty Paper.
Mahalia Jackson: Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Mahalia Jackson was a gospel singer with a powerful, strong voice. Her success began In 1947 when she sold over a million copies of Move a Little Higher. Her unforgettable Christmas songs includes I Wonder as I Wonder and Go, Tell It on the Mountain.
Jimmy Boyd. I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus was sang by Jimmy Boyd when he was 11 years old. Singing for a radio show at age 7, Jimmy Boyd became a young star with I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus. While this Christmas song became an overnight success, not everyone approved. In Boston the song was banned by the Catholic church, believing the Christmas song hinted of sex. Young Jimmy Boyd met with Catholic leaders to discuss the song's meaning, and the ban on the song was later lifted.
Nat King Cole. Popular in the 1940's and 1950's, Nat King Cole's most memorable Christmas songs include The Christmas Song, Take Me Back to Toyland and The Little Boy That Santa Forgot.
Perry Como. Besides singing many traditional Christmas songs, Perry Como's Christmas hits include I Wish It Could Be Christmas Forever, There is No Christmas Like a Home Christmas and Christmas Bells. Very enjoyable Christmas tunes.
