Jessie Penn
It seems that PC video games are everywhere. How do you know which game to buy? Which ones are or are not suitable for your children? It seems that many, if not most, video games are overflowing with violence and killing. Be sure to research before bagging one for your child's Christmas stocking.

Anyway, after a bit of research the top 10 video games all seem to be interwoven with warfare, killing and strategy. But, I set out to list the 10 most popular games, so here's what the experts seem to be saying.

TOP 10 PC GAMES AND REVIEWS:

Dragon Age: Origins (Ranked 9.5)

This is a computer role video game based on a new type of fantasy world. There is good storytelling, amazing dialog and voice that brings the characters to life. Dragon Age: Origins is an enjoyable game, and most seem unable to resist its wiles and whims. In this fictional land of Ferelden, you will meet many memorable characters and fight for causes you believe in.

Dragon Age's plot deals with the probability that demonic creatures will invade the darkspawn. The characters lurk within books of lore and stories of martyrs. It's a colorful fascinating kingdom with many cues from well-known tropes, but is unconventional enough to give an original feeling.

Batman: Arkham Asylum

This game has just been released on September 15, 2009, inspired by Eidos' comic book, which follows the caped crusader as he meets the Joker and other villains.

Right from the beginning, this story demands your attention. The uncomplicated combat is fast paced and has great graphics. There are many things to be unlocked, and the audio and visual presentations are impressive.

If you're not familiar with comic books, you might not know Arkham Asylum. The psychiatric hospital is actually Gotham City's Alcatraz, and houses most every villain that Batman has ever tangled with. The lunatics take control of the asylum and you must stop them.

Street Fighter IV

This is a 3D fighting video game, released on July 1, 2009. Street Fighter IV offers strong online multiplayer and great visuals. The game has been highly successful, with its technically complex 2D fighters and accessibilities. This video game is perfectly suited to the old adage "A minute to learn, a lifetime to master."

The Sims 3

This latest Sims game strikes the best balance between the fresh and the familiar. It provides a sense of community through intuitive creative tools. There are great visuals and audio, plus some specific goals. In some ways, it's similar to previous Sims video games, but makes a guest feel less of an outsider. There's been some big improvements, such as customization tools, new interaction with other sims and players, and more reachable goals and rewards. It might just be the most charming game in the series.

Borderlands

The genre of this video game is virtual life, and was released recently, on October 26, 2009. Borderlands is a sci-fi shooter that features a multiplayer online co-op. The combat is fun, and offers a steady flow of rewards, to make this an enjoyable journey. There is plenty of gun play, weapons, and shields, with four unique characters. However the game does seem to be slower-paced for solo players, and has a disappointing outcome.

The big draw of Borderlands is the setting on a hostile, bandit-laden planet of Pandora, and the attention getting Vault. The game offers a good mix of killing enemies, acquiring loot, and fighting bosses. However, it is best played with others, as the game is slow and methodical when played solo.

Red Faction: Guerrilla

This video game was released on September 15, 2009, an original shooter series, and is the latest generation of gaming systems. Red Faction: Gerrilla is a third-person action game that is great for anyone hungry for destruction. However, the story is weak, and tends to be repetitive. The lowly sledgehammer is the best weapon in Red Faction: Guerrilla. The sledgehammer can destroy everything, leaving rubble and havoc in it's wake. Your mission is to destroy Mars. It's packed with Demons of the Badlands downloadable content.

Resident Evil 5

The setting is Africa, and the latest bioterrorism threat is transforming people into mindless creatures. The video game has detailed graphics and animated characters. Playing against a partner adds to the fun and excitement and keeps the tension high. The game's predecessors were mostly about 'survival horror.' Resident Evil 5 is no longer considered a survival horror game, it does manage to retain tension into its new mechanics.

Hearts of Iron III

This video game was released in late summer, on August 11, 2009. It is a game of strategy, with newly designed features and a map of more than 10,000 provinces. As before, you must sift through much data, but it's easier to cut to the chase. Instead of being bogged down by the minutiae of war economics, you head straight away for more satisfying aspects of WWII. Although there are some technical glitches, it's still a user-friendly game.

Dawn of Discovery

This is all about an 18th Century exploration and settlement. Dawn of Discovery is complex, but offers much exploring, building and trading. It's packed with game achievements and gives you plenty of goals to go for. The game has a steep learning curve, and the manual does not provide much help.

Prototype

The setting is Manhattan, New York, and stars a man that can copy or change the appearance, skills and powers of anyone he meets. The game has an intriguing storyline, varied missions, and many moves and abilities. The game, itself, is challenging, but the scenery never changes and is dull.

Basically, the New York borough has been attacked by monsters, but never to the degree or with such disastrous results as depicted in Prototype.
