10 Top New Years Day Thoughts 2010

Jan Hoadley
The public world has been odd in 2009. We obsess with Taylor Swift and Tiger Woods but ignore what's happening with our tax dollars and legislation additions. Until money is 'missing' from our checks or our jobs are eliminated - until it is personal many discount any talk of what is happening in DC as political. It is political and, presumably something that affects most Americans whether we agree with politics or not.

What New Years Resolutions should be made? Here are some ideas!

1.Our elected officials that say they hear what the American people want but do otherwise resolve to have their salaries and bonuses "redistributed" to the people. This puts action to their own lives rather than exempting themselves.

2.For President Obama in the spirit of transparency resolves to take down the doors that obscure secret messages regarding the public money and policies. For a 'no secrets' promise there are many things being done behind closed doors.

3.For the media - resolve to report more facts less obsessive intrusive things. The news used to be information to let the people decide not telling them what to think.

4.Along with #3 for the public - the ability to decipher what affects your life and what doesn't. Tiger Woods' personal affairs and who slept with whom doesn't affect your life. Fascination with them doesn't change your life. Common sense for sponsors dovetails in here - are their executives squeaky clean?

5.For animal rights organizations from HSUS on down may the truth greet you tenfold. Much legislation is being met with messages of "that's not what we wanted" - as people realize the true goals are as restrictive as "alarmists" have said if not more so.

6.For farmers and many involved in agriculture the determination to keep telling your story. Many have persisted on Twitter, blogs and others and it makes it easier than ever for the consumer to learn about how and where their food is produced from the source.

7.For every American to think hard about making a difference for someone else. We all can reach out and make a difference. It doesn't take a huge effort, it often doesn't take money and it's infectious.

8.Also for every American the common sense and interest to see how - even if you hate politics - it affects your life. We may not like it but if we don't have enough interest to fire those not representing us then we really aren't free. Many in history died for that gift - don't give it up.

9.For the 'victims' who aren't - reality checks for you too. The drunk driver who ran into a white, well lit carriage then left bodies in the street to leave the scene along with a loose, injured horse it is only the drunk driver responsible. Not the legal carriage business, not those paying for a ride, not the driver, not the officer - the one who climbed behind the wheel after drinking, and many like them.

10.To the American soldier wherever you are serving may you feel the respect and admiration of those you represent. Thank you.

Here's to a great 2010.
