10 Tricks to Save the Country from $4 Per Gallon Gasoline Prices

If Congress Can't Make it a Priority Then They Don't Deserve a Job

Todd Jacobs
Gas prices are approaching the dreaded $4 per gallon mark and now it is time for every U.S. citizen to make a stand and do their part to lower the price of gas. Most of these ideas are an easy fix and others may not be easy but they are important to get the economy back on track.

Ideas such as checking tire inflation are an easy task that can be accomplished with a quick adjustment to a daily schedule. Other ideas such as eliminating an SUV from the roadways and buying a new energy efficient vehicle may take longer to bring to fruition.

10. Check Tire Inflation Daily

An easy task that everyone forgets. Checking tires, especially when the weather changes, is an important task that cannot be ignored. Keep tires properly inflated can be worth as much as five more miles-per-gallon and it will help the life of the tires.

9. Watch Speed Limit on Long Trips

When taking a long trip leave plenty of time and enjoy the drive. Make sure not to speed and take your time. Driving five miles-per-hour slower will save 15 percent more gas. The key is to be steady and use cruise control if possible. The consumer energy department displays a graph that explains this well.

8. Don't Idle

Idling for more than 30 seconds is bad for gas mileage and bad for the environment. Everyone has done this at one time or another but it is important to remember to shut off the ignition instead of placing strain on the engine and spewing carbon into the air.

7. When Driving in City Do Not Rush To Next Red Light

We see drivers do this every time we are on the city streets. They race from light to light and have to brake so hard at the next light the nose of their car touches the asphalt. It is not only frustrating to watch these drivers but it is also very wasteful to our gas supply. Remember when driving to relax and drive a normal and easy pace while driving in the city.

6. Check the Gas Cap

Remembering the gas cap sounds like a simple task but there are plenty of cars driving our streets without one. Make sure every car driven has a gas cap and it is a fuel efficient cap. The caps are clearly marked and readily available in most auto stores.

5. Buy an Energy Efficient Vehicle Preferably Electric

This is a task that my be difficult to accomplish in the short term but it is an essential duty of everyone to buy a fuel efficient or electric vehicle. In London, England the majority of the cars on the road are fuel efficient and SUVs are a rare sight.

4. Plan Trips and Errands in Detail

Before running errands plan the trips out in detail and avoid any unnecessary driving. Planning out a day of driving will help a driver stay organized and accomplish more tasks. Besides saving gas, planning out a day can be fun and will allow for more free time later in the day,

3. Tune Ups and Oil Changes Are Important

Keeping a car perfectly tuned is critical to creating the best possible mileage. Tune ups must be completed on average every six months and oil changes must be completed every three months depending on mileage. Most manufacturers recommend a tune up every 30,000 miles and an oil change every 3,000 miles.

2. Get Rid of the SUV

SUV's are dinosaurs that must be put out of our misery. They are partially responsible for the gas crisis as it stands now and their removal from our roadways are long overdue. Once we rid ourselves of unnecessary goliath SUV's that get eight miles-per-gallon, we will save billions of gallons of gasoline a year.

1. Write Congress and Tell Them Your Vote is Dependent on Their Energy Policy

How tired are you of the gas prices being manipulated? The only way this problem will get solved is if everyone writes their Congressman and tells them they will be voted out if they do not work immediately on reducing the gas prices. The power of the pen and the people is mightier than the sword.

Find your senator's email and address and flood their inbox and the mailbox with demands for lower prices on gas. Here is all members of the House of Representative's email addresses. Here is all of the U.S. Senator's email. Now get busy and email everyone member of Congress in your state or you are to blame for the high gas prices. Congress can fix this problem and we all need to let them know they are accountable.

Here's a trick for feeling ok: Put some money in oil and start getting something back when the prices go up. It does not fix the problem but makes you feel better.
