10 Under $10 Ideas for Decorating a Holiday Guest Room

Inexpensive Decorating Ideas for a Holiday Guest Room

C. Jeanne Heida
Short on cash for decorating your guest room this holiday season? You are not alone. These days, most of us are having to save money for Christmas gifts instead of blowing it on seasonal decor for a guest room.

Fortunately for those of us who would like to add a little Christmas cheer to the spare bedroom, there are a number of inexpensive ways this can be done. Here are 10 great "under $10" ideas I found for adding some decorative touches to the guest room.

Buy a bundle of Christmas themed holiday napkins. Generously sized holiday themed cloth napkins are found at discount stores priced between $3-6 per 6-count. These cloth napkins are large enough to be used as mini tablecloths and are a cheap way of adding decorative accents to bedroom furniture.

Fill a reed basket with live pines cones. A dollar store reed basket filled with real pine cones is a low cost way of making any room Holiday festive.

Search for Christmas kitsch at the drugstore. Discount drugstores have an amazing selection of deeply discounted holiday kitsch that can add sparkle to the corner of your guest room. I turned up the cute reindeer as shown at Rite Aid for only $3. What a deal!

Fill a tall dollar store vase with Christmas orbs. You can tap into your own supply of glass Christmas orbs to make this simple guest room decoration

Drape a holiday throw over the guest bed. 50 x 60 fleece throws are more popular than ever and usually priced (on sale) anywhere from $4.99-$9.99. For covering a guest room bed, chose a print with a holiday theme.

Decorate the guest room door with a wreath. I'll make my own holiday wreaths out of Virginia creeper ivy with sprigs of fir wired in and among the vines. If you aren't crafty, dollar stores have woven vine wreaths that will make a great substitute.

Buy holiday themed pillowcases. Holiday themed decorator pillows can cost upwards of $15 and more. A less expensive substitute is to buy a set of holiday print pillowcases (priced between $5-10) to cover the everyday bed pillows. These look best of course when paired with the solid color sheets you may already own.

Hang paper snowflakes in the window. Do you remember making paper snowflakes as a kid? This no-cost craft is an elegant way to add festive touches to the bedroom windows and mirrors.

Add some dazzling gold accents. There is something about a can of gold spray paint that turns even the junkiest thrift store finds into elegant table top decor. I'll scour the thrifts for things likes ugly candle sticks or vases, plastic wisemen or even vacation souvenirs and spray paint them gold. The look is amazing.

Make floral arrangements out of Christmas tree trimmings. Pruning back the tree to fit in the Christmas tree stand usually means leftover branches for decorating. These leftover branches look fantastic when pruned back and nicely arranged in a holiday vase. If plain branches are too ho-hum, some dollar store berry sprigs and Christmas ribbon are usually all that's needed to add the finishing touch.

Wonderful ideas, Jeanne. Just hanging some greens by the drapes seemed to dress up our spare room. Cheers :)
