Pick the Perfect Bike: Before going on any kind of mountain bike ride, make sure your child has the proper bike that "fits" them. This means to make sure that the bike doesn't seem to over-tower them in size. If your child's feet will not reach the petal with ease, either adjust the seat or pick a new bike.
Bring Snacks/Drinks: In order to keep the kids motivated the whole time while riding a mountain bike, you may need to bring snacks and drinks. Kids love to eat and ride or drink and ride at the same time, it will take everyone's bike riding experience to another level.
Don't Rush: If your child is having a hard time adapting to riding the mountain bike, be patient. Don't rush or force your child to go at a faster pace than they choose to. You must be patient because if you don't, you may surely turn your child's attention away from bike riding period.
Obey Traffic & Trail Signs: This is an important safety issue for both you and your child; you must always obey traffic and trail signs. If you see a stop sign or trail sign that indicates for you to go another direction, follow it with no questions asked!
Stop Regularly: It is important for you to take breaks often. Kids, unlike adults, need to rest every block or so in order to make progress. This may not make sense to some but think of it like this, if you keep going after your child says they're tired, they will probably get off their bike and stay off! Take Breaks for the little people!
Pick Fun Places: Kids are into fun things and fun places so this means, pick a fun place to ride the mountain bikes. Stick to picking places that have lots of kids or amusing things for your child, such as the characters they're into. Fun places include parks, beaches and fairs or festivals.
Have the Right Gear: Make sure you have lots of protective gear for your child, especially if this will be their first time riding a mountain bike. Protective gear should include helmets, pads as well as handlebar grips.
Avoid Uneven Surfaces: Since kids don't always have the reaction time of adults, steer clear of all uneven or jagged surfaces. Your child will not always know how to balance themselves on the bike in case any one of these obstacles arises.
Never Leave Them Unattended: Be sure to never leave your child on the bike unattended. If you have to stop or go in somewhere, take your child with you. You child could get seriously hurt if left unattended on the bike alone. Even if you have locking breaks on the mountain bike, it's still just a good rule or thumb to always watch them.
Scan Ahead: When riding with your child, be sure to be on your job and scan ahead. This will prevent you from riding over sharp objects or making a detour at the last minute.
