Metallic Colors.
You can find a wide range of colors that have a metallic finish. These items are great to add as accent pieces for rooms with bright color schemes. It is best to use metallic versions of other color shades within the room. For example if there are a lot of purples in the room then adding an accent or two in a purple with metallic finish would be wonderful.
Lights.
Lights are easy to find in a wide variety of metallics and are a great place to add a little color. Silver will brighten the room while gold and copper will add warm tones to your color scheme. You can choose to update your light fixtures and choose table and floor lamps that will add light as well as metallics to your color scheme. If you are a little hesitant to add a set of lamps or a fixture that is all metallic then choose something with a wood that matches your color scheme (light, medium, or dark) that has some metal accents.
Wall Hangings.
There are lots of options for great wall accents that come in a wide range of metallic colors. You can find beautiful picture frames that can add life to your pictures, a beautiful poster, or a painting. These can be used in every room of the house for added depth and color. You can also choose mirrors that are framed in the metallic color of your choice.
Fabrics.
Most of the time we associate metallics with metals, but it definitely doesn't have to be that way anymore. Fabrics can add a lot of options for great metallic colors. You can get throw pillows and blankets in silvers, golds, coppers, and other metallic colors to add to your decor. You can also get fabrics that have details in metallics for your furniture. Aim for a small amount of metallic color in the print. Another option is to add metallic fabrics to your lampshades, as table runners and toppers, and in other small ways.
Shelves.
Shelving can be used for so many things these days. You can use metallic colored shelves for the added color to your wall space. This can be a great way to include a little light or warmth. If you don't want to buy metallic shelves then you can make them using wood. You can then paint to shelves for a very bright metallic color. Or you can stain the wood to your desired color. Choose to add a metallic edge to it. It is also possible for you to choose shelf brackets that are lovely and in any shade of metal that you wish to use.
Decor objects.
We use a lot of different items in our homes that can then add metallic colors to a room. Choose metallic nick knacks for your shelves. You can also get vases in great metallic colors. But that isn't all. Add a metallic colored beads in various locations for some great color and a lot of great options.
Furniture.
Today there are tons of great metallic options for making your house into the perfect home. You can find beautiful metallic colored desks, coffee tables, end tables, and more. It is possible to find these colors mixed with wood and glass as well.
Electronics.
These days you can also get your electronics in metallic colors. This is mostly an option available in silver and bold colors such as blue, green, and red. This can be a great option for choosing electronics that match a rooms decor. An example would be a metallic purple computer and a silver monitor for a kids room that is done in purples. Or you can add a silver TV for a living room done in blues and silvers.
Wall papers.
Wall paper isn't the easiest to put up, but there are a lot of great options. Silver, gold, copper, and other options are great as a part of a wall paper design. Using wall paper should be done carefully. Make sure you aren't overwhelming the space with too much for the eye to settle. Instead of doing a lot of pattern all over the bedroom do half the wall in wall paper or a single accent wall.
Area Rugs.
Area rugs are a great way to make it possible to change your floor look and feel without a lot of expense and without a lot of work. Area rugs are also a great way to add metallic colors, especially gold and copper, into a room. You can choose small rugs to highlight small areas or a large rug for the center of a room.
Paint.
Metallic paint has become more and more popular over the years. There are a ton of different options for using metallic paints as part of your decor. You can use it to paint your trim or even to highlight an entire wall. This works really well for gold. You can also use it to add color to objects that don't already have a lot of color. For example you can take a dry brush and add a dab of metallic paint. Gently brush it onto a scrap piece of paper. Next brush it onto the lamp shade. Just a small amount will be added for a fresh, clean, dry look. You can do this with wood picture frames, wood shelves, wood furniture, and even fabrics (make sure you buy fabric paint or fabric medium to make it stay).
Tips.
Go slow. Adding metallics should be a slow process. That way you can add the perfect amount without getting carried away. It is also a good idea to work a dispersing them throughout the room for great eye appeal and make sure that they don't get clustered into one location where they will become heavy to look at.
Warm verses cold. Silver and colors that are metallic tend to be cold or cool to the eye. They make good accent pieces, but they should be used in moderation and very carefully. Gold and copper (especially gold) are much more forgiving colors and warm to the touch often giving rooms a cozy feel. These do much better as larger portions of the decorations and doing a room in golds with other accent colors is acceptable, warm, and rich.
Color families-Silvers and Metallic colors. Colors do best as compliments or contrasting families. Silver does really well in a fair amount with bright colors and pastels. Silver is also a good accent to add to a cooler color pallet such as one using green, blue, or purple. In smaller amounts silver can add a nice contrast to the rich neutral pallets including browns. It was believed for a long time that wood and silver didn't go together. However this isn't necessarily true and rich wood colors can be contrasted with silver for a great look. It is true, however that silver is more commonly used with glass and mirrors in decorating. Colors that have a metallic finish often fit in the same category as silver because of the finish tone and feel.
Color families-Golds and Coppers. Golds and coppers are warm and rich. They are often used in color pallets that are warm and rich as well such as deep browns, reds, and burgundies. However, they can be used to add warmth to a cooler color pallet as well. These colors can be your main colors as well and be accented with wood as well as other colors. Gold and copper are more commonly used to accent wood, but can be used with glass and mirror as well.
Having fun and enjoy the outcome of your decorating projects is important. In fact, whether or not you like it is more important than if I like it or if a decorator likes it. It is your home. However, this is a great place to start adding metallics to accent the color choices that you have made and to draw the eye in with the details you choose.
