10 Ways to Create a Peaceful Bedroom

Sleep is a Vital Part of Life and is Aided by a Comfortable Bedroom

Even in a home with little space to spare, it is possible to create bedroom that is free of the noise and clutter of other parts of the house. With some planning and maybe a cash outlay, everyone can have a sleeping space that is personal, comfortable and relaxing.

10 Thoughts on the Perfect Sleeping Space

A bedroom needs to be kept at a temperature that is suitable for sleeping. This may require heating in winter and air conditioning in summer but there are other ways to manage temperature. Carpets warm a room and tiled floors cool it. Thick curtains can act as insulation. Dark coloured drapes will tend to absorb heat while light colours will reflect it.

Air that is too dry or too humid can cause discomfort while sleeping. Consider using a humidifier or dehumidifier to overcome these problems.

How to Choose Beds and Bedding

Beds wear out and should be re-evaluated every couple of years. Look for damaged legs and bases, sagging mattresses and mattresses that have lost their shape. Any bed that causes backache or discomfort should be thrown out. Mattresses should be turned every few weeks.

Bedding is a personal choice and the range is wide. Consider duvets, futons, quilts, blankets and sheets. Natural products such as down, wool and cotton breathe better and offer greater warmth in winter. Poly-cottons are more crease resistant.

Bed covers add considerably to the tone of a bedroom. Some people thrive on bright bold colors such as violet and orange while others prefer pastels and delicate florals. It is an individual choice but each person should remain true to what works for them. Plump cushions and pillows can add to the appeal.

Walls are commonly painted but may be wood panelled or wallpapered. Whatever the finish, make sure it blends in or works with the rest of the room. A coat of paint can dramatically alter atmosphere so may be worth doing to create a calm haven. Hang a few favorite artworks to finish the room off.

Distractions in a Bedroom

Electronic gadgets are not conducive to a peaceful night's sleep. As far as possible, remove all televisions, computers, iPods and similar from a sleeping environment. Ticking clocks can be annoying and a digital clock distracting. If a clock is essential for its alarm, keep the face turned away from the bed. Keep lighting dim.

Minimize clutter in a bedroom as it looks busy and can be distracting when trying to relax. Store papers in drawers and don't have dozens of knick-knacks on every available surface.

Pets in a bedroom can be a disturbance. They may not sleep through the night and nocturnal washing or scratching sessions can be a nuisance. Try putting them to sleep in the laundry or another area of the house.

A fragrant bedroom is a pleasant place to relax in. This can be achieved in a number of ways:

  • Rinse bed linen with a pleasant smelling fabric softener
  • Use an oil burner with fragrant oils
  • Scented candles create a lovely atmosphere
  • Unwrap an expensive soap and place in a warm spot so the fragrance will be released
  • Use scented drawer liners or store wooden cedar balls with clothing

Bedrooms are individual and private and everyone has their own preferences. With some planning and a few changes, it is possible to change a bedroom from a cluttered mess to a peaceful haven. Sleep is vital for wellbeing, and investing time, effort and maybe some cash is a worthwhile venture to ensure ongoing rest at night.
