10 Ways to Deal with Writer's Block

Kelly Spies
Do you have writer's block? How do you know it is writer's block and not just a lack of sentence building words? Perhaps you just don't have anything interesting to say today. I know I don't. Not today anyway, or even yesterday or the day before that really. With no real coherent thoughts in mind I discovered that when there's nothing to write about my mind occupies itself with other activities that while not entirely satisfying to the literary senses are at least an exemplary form of self amusement. So when you have nothing to write that's worthy of the blank page give one of these activities a try.

Eye Gouging - Be it a painful way to pass the time it will definitely give you some things to say about why you should or shouldn't participate in eye gouging. When words escape you use your forefinger to poke yourself in the eye. This will occupy at least a good five minutes of your time. Not the actual gouging part but the rubbing your eye and screaming part.

Nose Picking - I'm sure many a writer has divulged in the mining of mucus excretions in the throes of boredom. I can't guarantee that picking your nose will cause your muse to show up chalk full of inspiration and pep talks but at least the booger flicking is somewhat entertaining; especially when they get stuck to the ceiling.

Origami- Nothing gets the creative juices flowing like using your discarded, half started manuscripts to make origami swans. You never know, writer's block origami might lead to a career in Japanese table decorating.

Pimple Inspecting - Who would have ever thought that inspecting your body for pimples could be productive work? Checking yourself over for pimples is a fantastic way to avoid writing that next great piece of literary work.

Paper Clip Crafts - When the words aren't coming and you find yourself obsessed with your writer's block why not just put the laptop away and start making crafts out of paper clips. Look at the bright side; when you fail as a writer you'll be able to earn a living selling your paper clip crafts on eBay.

Chair Spinning - Ahh to be a child again! Spinning your office chair around and around until you are so dizzy you puke up your morning coffee can do no less than relieve the stress of adulthood and momentarily distract you from finishing your latest work.

Animal Calls - This is perhaps one of my favorite ways to deal with writer's block. Instead of typing, deleting, typing and deleting some more I prefer to sit in front of my computer and make strange animal calls. Chicken noises are my favorite to make.

Facial Exercises - Experts say we should get daily exercise so why not facial exercises. One exercise that can be easily done from the comfort of your office chair is the double chin exercise. Simply tilt your head all the way back, push your bottom jaw outward and open and close your mouth. This will work out the muscles in your neck and keep you from getting any real writing done.

Pigging out - When all else fails and you can't seem to get one word written go eat something. Eat a lot of somethings. Eat everything in the house. Eat until you have to be rolled down the hallway, sideways. Nobody can write on an empty stomach.

Pencil Drumming - Who needs Rock Band? Not me! All I need is two pencils and I'm in business. I can easily spend a whole afternoon pencil drumming to the music on my mp3 player which is way more fun than using my pencils to write something that I, or anyone else, finds even the smallest bit interesting.

Now that you know how to deal with writer's block go write something, or pick your nose or something.
