Easy Ways to Stay in Shape While You're Away

R. Elizabeth C. Kitchen
Every time I have had to go out of town, one of the first things I pack are some resistance bands, tennis shoes, and workout clothing. When we are away from home we are often either seeking to relax, or are so busy with business that we do not think about exercise, but it is important to keep up our workout routine. Read on to learn about the top ten ways to exercise on vacation.

Take a Hike

Most places are close to a park or reservation. A hike is a great way to maintain our fitness while on vacation. All you will need is an hour to hike and burn some calories.

Take a Walk on the Beach

We aren't always near a beach on vacation, but when we are the beach is a great choice for a workout. Simply walking or jogging on the sand can provide a great workout. Sand also gives resistance, so in addition to the great cardiovascular workout we are also getting some strength training in at the same time.

Go For a Swim

Most hotels have pools, and if you are vacationing near a beach, you will have the ocean or lake to swim in too. Take advantage of a good swim. It is not only a good cardiovascular and strength training workout, but it is refreshing and low-impact as well.

Play Some Ball on Vacation

Regardless of where you choose to vacation there is sure to be a place to play basketball, volleyball, or tennis. Hotels often have tennis courts available to guests. Basketball courts can be found at nearby parks and recreation centers. Volleyball courts are on just about every beach.

Hit the Trails on a Bike for a Workout

Most hotels and vacation spots have places where you can rent a bike. You can ride the trails at the local park, or the trails and paths along the local beach. This workout can be as hard or easy as you want it to be.

Hit the Stores for a Great Workout

Yes, shopping. Shopping involves a lot of walking and carrying heavy bags. The walking is good for cardiovascular health and carrying those heavy bags can give you a little strength training workout.

Hit the Hotel Gym

Most hotels have a gym that guests can use for free. When you have some free time take advantage of the gym and the equipment it has to offer.

Go on a Walking Tour

Many vacation spots have walking tours. Examples include the rainforest or a guided hike in a park. Just be sure to wear comfortable and sturdy shoes, and bring plenty of water and a small, nutritious snack that is non-perishable.

Take a Boat Out

Most areas offer some form of boating, such as kayaking, canoeing, or rafting. These all offer great upper body workouts and cardiovascular benefits.

Walk Instead of Drive

When you are on vacation walk to the places within walking distance. Avoiding the cab or rental car will not only allow you to walk more, but it will save you money too.
