10 Ways to Go Eco-Friendly While You Sleep

Ann Siper
Nothing is easier than being eco friendly while you sleep! Many of these ideas for easy ways to be eco friendly in your lifestyle are very easy. Others may take a little planning, but hey, think of the restful sleep you will have since you will know you are doing your part to be eco friendly!

#10 Turn Those Lights Off

This one is a great place to start. That is because this is the easiest way for everyone to be Eco Friendly while they sleep! It takes a second! No one needs lights on while they are sleeping anyway!

#9 Tighten Those Faucets

OK, so I am still warming you up with easy ideas for eco friendly living. Simply making sure those water faucets around the house are completely closed is so easy to do and will save gallons of water in no time!

You won't ever have to be woken up by the drip drip drip of the faucet at midnight either!

#8 Water the Lawn

So, this one will take a second or two of planning. If you love a green lawn though, you probably already know this easy way to go eco friendly in the yard.

Simply purchase a timer to set off your sprinklers. Have it set to go off during the night, sometime before midnight. Running the water at night will give it less of a chance to evaporate before it is soaked by your thirsty lawn.

I bet you will love your newly green lawn as well!

#7 Check Your Fridge Temp

One of the best ways to save money while we sleep is to make sure we are not wasting energy with our appliances. Try using a thermometer to check the accuracy of the temperature in your fridge.

If you open the fridge door into the morning and find ice on the milk jug, then this easy eco friendly lifestyle tip is for you. Your fridge needs to be kept between 37 to 40 degrees. The freezer can be kept anywhere form 0 to 5 degrees! Any cooler and you are wasting energy

#6 Add a Blanket to the Bed

Now, this is maybe the second easiest ways to go green while you sleep! We can all do this one.

#5 Pump Gas

Ok, I know you can not pump gas in your sleep, but you could make it an evening ritual to fill up when the sun is not blazing away. Controlling when evaporating toxins are released into the air is something we call all do. Less evaporation will occur during the cooler hours.

#4 Let the Dishes Soak

Ok, no one loves washing dishes, but we all know it uses so much less water, not to mention energy, when we do. Try soaking grimy dishes in the sink with a little soap overnight. You will be amazed how easy they are to clean the next morning!

#3 Open Those Blinds!

Opening the blinds will allow the sun to naturally warm your home as it rises in the morning. Take advantage of the free light and warmth still offered!

#2 Unplug Appliances (And That Computer!)

Take the time to unplug appliances that you do not use on a regular basis. You can also unplug appliances you will not be using while you are sleeping! Appliances that are plugged in, but not on, still consume energy.

So, when you finish drying your hair in the morning, unplug the hairdryer. The whole day and at night while you are sleeping you will be saving electricity!

#1 Set the Thermostat

So, one of the best steps we can all do to go eco friendly while we are sleeping is to turn that thermostat down. If you added the blanket mentioned before, you will certainly be warm enough!

I lower my thermostat to 55 degrees at night. Not only do I live an easy eco friendly lifestyle, but also heating bill was only $110 a month while my neighbors was over $250! You can not beat those savings when you own or live in a house!

I started doing step #2 a few years ago and found that simply unplugging my tv/vcr set up saved me about $10/month on electricity. I was shocked, but have heard similar figures for desktop computers. (Actually, I flipped off the power strip, but it's sort of the same thing!) A more time-consuming way to do an eco-friendly lawn is to add some native shrubbery that require less water. You can line a sidewalk or highlight your porch. But I'm glad to see steps everyone can easily do, too.
