Recession, Depression or Economic Downturn, Don't Let It Harm Your Mood

While economists say we are beginning the second of two recessions of the decade, for most people it doesn't seem like the first recession ever ended. Yes, Rep. Michele Bachmann, you were wrong.

President Obama wasn't trying to create unsubstantiated fear in American citizens: Our credit rating was downgraded and stocks are falling. Looking at a graph, you could say they were plunging off the edge of a cliff. Those who lost most of their money in the first recession have something to celebrate. You can't lose money if you don't have any left.

For those of you who fall into that category, the recession has had its upside. People are learning to live simply, taking gratification in life's little happy moments, not relying on the next shopping spree to provide that temporary high.

Here are 10 ways to enrich your life without spending a dime.

* Get physical. Any type of exercise helps gets your endorphins going and you'll be less likely to fall victim to depression. It helps you to stay in the moment and can change a negative perspective into something more positive. Whether you walk, run, hike, bike, or dance, you'll feel better, and it's free. There is no need to shell out big bucks for an expensive gym.

* Meditation. The simple act of deep breathing can help you live in the moment. It is an excellent stress- and anxiety-reducer, with many benefits to both your mental and physical health.

* Keep a grateful list. It's important to be grateful for what you do have instead of focusing on what you don't. The act of writing the list alone can make you feel better instantly.

* Spend time outdoors. Go bird watching, gaze at the stars at night, lay back on the grass and watch the clouds float by. Remember when you were a kid?

* Volunteer, or spend time with an elderly neighbor. By helping those who are less fortunate than we are, it not only makes you feel better, it can give you a more positive perspective.

* Read. Reading is like exercise for your brain, and it's free. Go to your local library and check out a book. You'll enhance your life and improve your brain function.

* Sex. It's a great stress reducer and helps you feel more connected to your partner, as well as being a great mood booster.

* Be a child again. Build a fort out of boxes or blankets in your living room, blow bubbles, or play at your local playground.

* Listen to music. Discover a new band you love.

* Write. Put your thoughts down on paper. Writing down your feelings can help keep you from dwelling on a problem and making it bigger than it is.
