10 Ways to Improve Your Writing by Writing for Fun

Lighten Up: Writing is Fun, Remember?

Nannette Richford
I recently asked a group of online writers what they write for fun. I was shocked to receive the response "I don't write for fun. I write to earn a living." How sad that anyone blessed with the ability to write should view it as merely a vehicle to make money and nothing more. Writing for fun provides an outlet from the world of writing for a living and brings a host of other benefits as well.

#10 Experience Freedom

The freedom to write about the things that are important to you without worries about SEO or writing requirements for the job is one of the benefits of writing for fun. It is an opportunity to write it your way and experience the liberation that only freedom can bring.

# 9 Direct Your Own Path

Writing for fun provides the opportunity to chase the muse in whatever direction it chooses to flow. There is no prescribed format or guideline to follow. The path you take is entirely up to you. Whether you choose to follow the proverbial beaten path or select the road less traveled is ultimately up to you. You may discover areas of writing that you never considered before.

#8 Relieve Stress

Writing for fun is a great stress reducer. Let's face it writing to someone else's guidelines is hard work. Take a break from the work of writing and play a little. Playing with words and ideas in new or unusual ways breaks the monotony of writing to meet goals or follow guidelines and increases your capacity to enjoy life. Enjoying life and your work as a writer frees you to explore other writing opportunities with confidence.

#7 Practice

Writing for fun provides writing practice in a relaxed atmosphere. Because you know exactly what you want to say, finding the right words is easier and the task of proofreading helps you refine and clarify your message. The more you practice the better you will become at writing to any topic with ease.

#6 Connect With Others

Connecting with others is easier when you are writing for fun because your audience is clear. It alleviates the murky waters of imagining your audience and directs your word choices to meet the needs of your real audience. Because you are writing for others with similar views and interests as your own, feedback is generally positive building your confidence as a writer.

#5 Develop Your Voice

Your voice rings clear when you write for fun. This helps you refine and develop your own personal style and clarifies voice. Although you will not always be free to express your voice with wild abandon, particularly if your write for others; writing without voice is at best a lifeless string of words attempting to convey a message. Use writing for fun to develop your voice and watch your writing take on new life.

#4 Unleash Creativity

Playing with words and writing for fun unleashes your natural creativity that in turn provides the opportunity to explore new areas of interest or try new writing techniques. Opportunities broaden as you expand your writing experience to new areas. Use your natural creativity to branch out and take advantage of new writing opportunities.

#3 Genuine Writing

When you write for fun, your words are unfettered and what you produce is genuine. Allowing yourself to step outside the box and entertain new thoughts eliminates the need to fall back on the ideas of others or to follow prescribed methods to achieve your goal. Your words and thoughts work together to create something new and original. The ability to produce original work puts you on the road to a successful writing career.

#2 Awaken Your Inner Child

Your inner child is awakened to the sense of play and adds the spark needed to go that extra step. Set aside the business side of writing and get in touch with your playful self who is still eager to write, if only only you let it. Nurture your ability to experience fun by welcoming your inner child to your writing and watch your writing ability unfold.

#1 Experience Joy

Writing for others may be rewarding both financially and emotionally, but it rarely brings pure unadulterated joy. Writing for fun returns that joy. Joy refreshes the soul and adds new dimensions to your writing allowing you to stretch into new areas and siege opportunities you may not have noticed before.

Perhaps you strive to earn a living as a writer and think there is no room for fun. You are wrong. Without adding fun to your writing, your style stagnates and you will soon wonder why you took up the challenge to write in the first place. Find the time to write simply for fun on a regular basis and you will soon reap the benefits of improved writing skills and gain a renewed sense of confidence in your ability to tackle any job.

Definitely yes! Many years ago I wrote and drew my own comic books, which was extremely enjoyable. Now, writing for AC does the same job.

I love writing for AC because I can pick whatever topic interests me. Great tips!

Yes, this is right. If you want to make money, only ever right about celebrities and sex (I am not endorsing this), and use lots of SEO. If you want want to write for fun, you will probably find greater satisfaction. Want to see what I mean? Try Nancy Canfield, for example. Interestingly, she has two of the top-commented articles on AC today.
