10 Ways to Pick Up Quick Cash

Fill Your Wallet in Unexpected Ways

Linda Ann Nickerson
Times are tough. Money is tight all over. However, it is possible to gather fast funds in creative (and completely legal) ways. Without taking out high-interest payday loans, cash advances or second mortgages, how can you make money fast?

Here are 10 simple, but perhaps unexpected, ways to pick up quick cash. Some tips lead to treasure, while others may reap smaller rewards.

1. Clean out the couch.

Check under furniture cushions in your home. Take loose change to the bank. Coin hunters may gain extra bonuses after big holiday parties.

2. Look under the car seats.

Don't vacuum the car without peeking under the seats. Look in the cup holders and door boots. Dropped toll money adds up fast. My teens have gone to the movies with such booty.

3. Recycle bottles and cans.

Don't toss empty soda bottles and cans, if you can cash them in. In many U.S. states, collection sites pay at least a dime apiece. How fast can you collect a few dollar' worth?

4. Consign clothing and valuables.

Remember that dress suit you've hardly worn? How about that antique tie tack or brooch and dust-gathering holiday figurines? Such items fetch big bucks in a classy consignment store.

5. Sell stuff you don't need.

From yard sales to flea markets to online auction sites, reselling could not be easier. Still, check carefully for hidden costs, particularly online.

While you're at it, why not sell your own baked goods, handicrafts or inventions?

6. Return unused items.

Have you bought items you later regretted? Did you receive a weird gift? Return these for cash or a merchandise card. Even without receipts, most stores offer at least partial credit for fairly timely returns.

7. Donate blood.

Blood banks will often pay cash for donations of blood or plasma.

8. Join a medical study.

Health researchers advertise for qualified patients to participate in studies. Often, these projects require only questionnaires, surveys or health tracking. Some studies carry medical risks; it pays to be careful.

9. Market your skills.

Are you a hobbyist or handy around the house? Can you operate a band saw or a vacuum? Do you love caring for pets or children? Use your imagination and skills to earn quick cash. Advertise your expertise, and spread the word to neighbors and friends.

10. Rent your parking spot.

Parking is premium in cities. Can you offer your driveway, garage or on-street parking spot for rent? If you live by a stadium or fair, how much cash can you make by parking cars in your yard? Do you have room for boat or trailer parking out back?

Use your imagination. It's like money in the bank. Quick cash is possible, if you simply get your assets in gear.

(I'm logged in under another Yahoo! account b/c I'm using that right now. Good ideas with these. However, Lake Charles is definitely not a place to rent parking spots - unless it's on Mardi Gras.
