10 Ways to Spice Up Your Coffee
Whether You're Trying to Get in the Holiday Spirit or Simply Need an Extra Tasty Boost in the Morning, This List Can Help You Add Some Flair to Your Cup of Coffee
Cinnamon
Adding cinnamon to your coffee as it's brewing is a fantastic way to awaken your senses. This is a great idea for the holidays - try adding a cinsnamon sprinkle to each cup of coffee before you serve them to your relatives!
Drinking Chocolate
Of course everyone loves a sweet and chocolaty mocha, and what better way to enjoy one than to add the ingredients to suit your tastes exactly? Adding drinking chocolate bit by bit can turn your cup of coffee into a tasty masterpiece.
Hazelnut Powder
Most people go straight for flavored coffee or creamers when they want the sweet and nutty taste of hazelnuts. If you buy organic hazelnut powder, the taste is far more pure, and you can add it without the cream - so no more overly light coffees just because you love hazelnut!
Baily's Irish Cream
If you're old enough to drink, then Baily's is a fantastic addition to your coffee. (As long as it's past noon, that is!) Adding just a splash can give your mug a delicious kick.
Nutmeg
This is great to use with cinnamon and is best used when put in the coffee grinder before brewing along with your beans or coarse grounds. This gives your coffee a "pumpkin spice" sort of flavor, and it's an especially nice treat around the holidays.
Peppermint
Whether you let a sweet peppermint stick sit in your mug with your drink or add a few drops of peppermint syrup, this minty kick to your cup can perk up your senses and get you out of a dull mood in no time. This is more of an acquired taste, though!
Coconut
You have a few safe bets if you want to add the delicious taste of coconuts to your coffee - you can use coconut milk, coconut water, or coconut extract. If you use the extract, use very little and always make sure it's the liquid kind! Coffee with coconut goes especially well with pastries in the morning or early afternoon. Yum!
Caramel
This one is a given, as caramel swirls or splashes are available at many coffee shops all over the world. Caramel is sweet and can be very light-tasting, making it adored by lovers of coffee everywhere. It's very sugary though - and that means it's not so good for you!
Salt
This is a weird one, but in many cultures salt is used in coffee (and many other beverages) to remove bitterness. In fact, salt is used in many sweet treats the world over, and is used before brewing in coffee pots to ensure a cleaner tasting brew.
Almond Extract
This is my personal favorite - almond not only tastes delicious, but the scent of almonds is irresistible. Adding just a tiny bit of organic almond extract to your coffee cup (or the whole pot once it's done) can give your taste buds a real treat.
