10 Winter Road Trip Tips

There are many precautions you need to have in order to be safely on your way to road trip heaven. Before you begin your trip you must prepare the vehicle for winter travel by removing the snow from around and on the vehicle. If you are going in heavy snow, tire chains will help you drive a lot more safely. They grip the slippery road and make the turns and the ice a little better to manage.

Being well informed about the weather conditions that you are about to go into is a very key part to a winter road trip. You definitely don't want to go anywhere unprepared. Weather conditions and updates are available at weather.com.

While driving, make sure that when you put your foot on the brake pedal that you do it lightly because pressing the breaks hard and fast on an icy road can get you into an accident. So when braking, brake slowly, lightly and smoothly.

Be aware of your surroundings. Bridges, low spots and dimly lit areas are the first to freeze so be very careful approaching these areas.

Driving in bad conditions can make you very tired. So be sure to stop at a rest stop or pull over if you are feeling sleepy. Pushing yourself in extreme conditions can lead to an extreme mistake or an accident.

Taking short cuts in winter weather can be a bad choice. A lot of times back roads are closed down due to bad weather. Taking a back road during bad weather can leave you stranded. Being stranded on a back road might mean it will take someone a little longer to find you.

If you do find yourself stranded, the best thing to do is stay in your car and keep warm. If you have a cell phone, you can call for help. Otherwise, keep warm in your car and ration your food/water until you are found. Keep your emergency lights on so people know that you are in need of some assistance. Many people will stop if they see that your emergency lights are on, especially in the winter season.

Keeping all of these winter road trip tips in mind, have a safe journey. Wherever the winter days might take you at least you know that you will be well prepared. Follow the road safety rules and be very leery of the winter road hazards.
