10 Wonderful Christmas Songs

S Faloon
I love Christmas songs. They can help get me into the spirit of the season. They are great to listen to in the car when heading out on shopping trips. They fill the air at stores and add to the excitement while wrapping gifts. Here are 10 of my favorites from collector records, radio and Christmas carroling adventures. They are in no particular order.

Do You Hear What I Hear? I've loved this for many years. From the wind to the lamb, on to the shepherd boy and mighty king. They hear, see and know about The Child that will bring goodness and life to us all.

Angels We Have Heard On High As a child I loved singing this when our Junior Choir went caroling around town. I loved 'conquering' the Glo-oo--ooorria parts. It's a hard but fun song when I mastered that 'gloria in excelsis deo' part.

The 12 Days of Christmas This is one we all try to figure out just how much 'stuff' was given by the true love. I am the oldest of 3 girls. When the youngest was around 7 or 8 years old I sang the entire thing to her as I replaced all the 'r's with 'w's. She laughed the entire time I sang " The Patwidge in the Pewah Twee". I'll never forget her happy laughter.

Sweet Little Jesus Boy This is on one of a collection of records I bought when in Junior High over 30 years ago. I was so proud that I could afford the collection. The song is beautiful. "Sweet little Jesus boy, they made you be born in a manger. Sweet little holy child and they didn't know who you were. Didn't know you'd come to save us Lord, to take our sins away. Our eyes 'was' blind, we didn't see who you was."

O Holy Night This is a beautiful song. It has a powerful feeling to it. I love it when a soloist performs it with a back up choir.

Silent Night To me this is a traditional song. How wonderful it would be for us all to slow down and enjoy a silent and holy night. Sleeping in Heavenly peace would be a great gift in this rough, depression filled, economically stressed time.

The Little Drummer Boy This has always been one of my very favorite Christmas songs. I love it. I can easily picture a child coming before the holy family and in a child's giving innocent nature he wants to give the baby a present. The serene Mary nods and the child plays his drum for baby Jesus.

(I'm Dreaming of a) White Christmas This is the ultimate Bing Crosby Christmas song isn't it? Those of us in that certain age group who saw the old movie when we were kids always remember the big stage opening up and snow coming down. As a Mainer it can be a gloomy atmosphere if we have no snow at Christmas time. The song holds a certain emotional tone here.

What Child Is This? "This, this is Christ the king, the babe, the son of Mary." It's simply a beautiful song.

The Christmas Song A recording by 'Alvin and the Chipmunks'. See, I'm not altogether a serious person. I like the cute, silliness of this song. It's a smile bringer when it pops up on a radio staion.

Of course as this season winds up and television Christmas specials and radio stations feature artists' music my favorites can change day by day. Bring on Josh Groban, Manheim Steamroller or other awesome voices or orchestras and theirs will be my favorite. Enjoy the music of the season all.
