10 Worst Asian Movie Remakes

Let Me In has now hit theaters and many foreign remakes are on their way. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Orphanage are a couple of foreign movies coming to the United States. Though none of those movies are Asian, most of the remakes that come to the states are imports from Asia. Fans of Asian movies are usually critical of these movies for not living up to the original. These are the 10 Asian remakes that are the worst.

10) Shutter
Banjong Pisanthanakun's Shutter was originally released in Thailand in 2004 and was remade in the United States in 2008. Shutter just proved that it's not just Japanese horror movies that are poorly remade in America. Any Asian horror film is probably going to be bastardized in American movie theaters.

9) One Missed Call
The original One Missed Call by Takashi Miike was not a mind blowing film by any stretch of the imagination. It only received a 42% fresh rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and even the more lenient audience rating was only a 66%. Despite the mediocre original the remake still figured out a way to make a version that was a few levels below it as the remake had no positive reviews out of the 76 on Rotten Tomatoes.

8) Godzilla
It should not be surprising that a Godzilla remake was a failure. Godzilla is one of those classics that should never be touched. It was especially silly to think this would be a hit with the one hit wonder Matthew Broderick leading the movie and even that one hit (Ferris Bueller's Day Off) was overrated in my opinion.

7) Shall We Dance
For those that actually like the cliché romantic comedies then the Americanized Shall We Dance starring romantic comedy regulars Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez might be watchable. It still pales in comparison to the original which got incredible reviews (including a 93% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes) and won 14 awards at the Japanese Academy Awards including all of the big four - Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Film.

6) The Eye
Like many remakes of Japanese horror movies the original is truly terrifying experience. The American version simply takes some hot girl, in this case Jessica Alba, and has her running around for an hour and a half. No offense to Jessica Alba but any movie that has a 70% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes is going to have an inferior remake when it stars Jessica Alba. (Actually I guess I kind of just said Jessica Alba sucks so maybe she should take offense)

5) Pulse
The original Asian movie called "Kairo" was actually played at the Cannes Film Festival. The remake? Not so much. I don't think there was a single review of Pulse that didn't include the words "stale", "American" and "remake". Usually all bunched together in that order.

4) The Ring 2
The Ring was actually a pretty good remake of the original Asian film but they got a little too greedy. The second American Ring film hit the double whammy. Almost every Asian remake is worse than the original and almost every sequel is worse than the original. There was no way to make an American Ring 2 without the quality suffering a great deal.

3) The Grudge 2
The Grudge 2 is basically in the same boat as The Ring 2 except that the original Grudge wasn't even as good as the original Ring movie. It also does not help that the lead actress was not Naomi Watts in this series, someone that can actual act and is not just some random hot chick.

2) My Sassy Girl
The only thing worse than an American horror movie is an American romantic comedy. I don't want to sound like the cliché guy who hates romantic comedies. Old classic romantic comedies are great (and by old I mean like Cary Grant and not like the 90's) and foreign countries still make really good romantic comedies like My Sassy Girl, but American romantic comedies just aren't good and the remake of My Sassy Girl turns this really good Asian romantic comedy into the dull and sappy American kind.

1) The Warrior and the Sorceress
The Warrior and the Sorceress has the dubious distinction of being both the worst movie on this list and the adaptation of the best movie on this list. The Warrior and the Sorceress is a fantasy remake of Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo except that stars David Carradine and some chick that remains topless the entire movie.
