10 Worst Movies Based on Young Adult Books

The Last Ronin
There is no greater form of praise for an author than to have their book turned into a movie. As fans it is a chance for our favorite characters to come to life and get a chance to see rather than read our favorite story. Sometimes, though, the movie doesn't quite live up to the expectations of the fans or match the quality of it's original plot. Here is my list of the 10 worst movies adapted from young adult books.

"10 Things I Hate About You" - This movie is based on the William Shakespeare play "The Taming of the Shrew". It stars Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger and is set amidst the drama and day to day life of high school. While it isn't the worst movie adaptation out there it isn't one of my favorites. It has its moments, but in reality it is just another teen drama.

"Clueless" - Clueless is based on the Jane Austen book "Emma". While Alicia Silverstone did a good job portraying here character the whole movie is just one big cliche of 90210. If you are looking for a movie with no depth and some mediocre acting then you won't be disappointed.

"Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" - This movie based on the book by Dyan Sheldon is just down right awful. First off it stars Lindsay Lohan, ugh. It doesn't get much better from there as Lohan's character is pretty much a total ditz, who tries to fit in when her family moves to the suburbs. Don't waste your time on this one.

"Eragon" - Before I go any further, let me say that the book "Eragon" by Christopher Paolini was excellent. The movie, unfortunately wasn't that great. It had a lot of potential, but poor selection of actors were the ultimate downfall. The actor who played Eragon, just wasn't that good. It did have some cool fight scenes, but for the most part a lot was left out and the movie just didn't deliver.

"Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" - I am a pretty big fan of the Harry Potter books, but in my opinion this was by far the worst movie in the series. I felt like i was watching some Harry Potter soap opera for teenagers. My biggest complaint was all of the stuff that was left out. Many of the characters from the book were omitted and the big fight scene from the book was totally devoid. By far not one of the best in the franchise.

"I Know What You Did Last Summer" - This movie was based on the Lois Duncan book with the same name. I Know What You Did Last Summer is your typical teen horror movie (except without the horror). It had some decent actors and an ok plot, but the whole movie was pretty predictable and not that scary.

"Jumper" - This move was awful and should have never been made. Jumper was boring and had horrible actors. I'm not sure what could have been done to make this movie better, but I sure wouldn't recommend it to anyone, period.

"Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" - The thing that disappointed me most about this movie was the fact that it covered 3 books from the series. I read the books and there were just too many details in 3 books for one movie. I also didn't like the fact that Jim Carey played Count Olaf. In my opinion the character was supposed to be sinister and scary. Jim Carey's version was more on the "funny" side.

"O Brother, Where Art Thou?" - This movie, starring George Clooney, was based on Homer's "The Odyssey". It is one of my all time least favorite movies. I don't know if it's the fact that it has a horrible plot or just bad acting. Call it a mixture of both. Every time this movie comes on I have to change it. I guess if you like trashy, hillbilly movies then you will like this one.

"War of the Worlds" - This H.G. Wells book had potential to be a good movie, but in my opinion it wasn't. First off I'm not a Tom Cruise fan. I don't really think that he did this movie any justice. The other actors were pretty good, especially Dakota Fanning. Other than that this movie was just really over the top, non-stop action. In most cases I like that, but with this movie not so much.

Hmm...don't know about this list. About half of the books you have mentioned are NOT young adult. The movies are adaptations from popular adult books or classics. Of course, you have the right not to like them, but at least half of the movies you mention were popular and enjoyable.

    Yeah, WTF. are you high?

This guy has no idea what he is talking about. O Brother is the best adapted and appropriated Odyssey film out there.

You dissed O Brother Where Art Thou? You obviously don't know poop from Shinola.
