10 Year Old Gives Birth to Cousin's Baby

Last week a 10 year old girl shocked the world when she gave birth to a six pound six ounce baby girl. Spain said that they would not press legal charges because the girl became pregnant in Romania and then gave birth in Spain.

Since then the story of Elena Chiritescu has been revealed. She lived in Romania in poverty with her family. Her mother and aunt went to Spain to find work to help feed the family. While they were gone they each left their children with their grandmother. Elena, 10 years old and Gheorghe, 13 years old were both living with their grandmother in Romania while their mothers were away.

Unbeknown to their mothers, Elena and Gheorghe fell in love and eventually conceived a child. When the young gypsy's grandmother found out about the love affair and the baby, she allowed the two children to live together in her home as husband and wife. Neither of the kids had had romantic relationships before.

Elena's mother returned to Romania and brought her daughter to Spain where she gave birth to a healthy Nicoleta Narcisa Chiritescu on October 26, 2010.

Elena's cousin, Gheorghe remains in Romania.

It is unlikely that any charges will be pressed in the case since both parents are minors. It is also normal in the gypsy community for children to marry young although it is illegal to marry under the age of 16 in Romania and even at sixteen, they must have the written consent of their parents.

There are 11 other known births from girls that were younger than 10 years old. The youngest girl to ever give birth was a 5 year old girl in Lima, Peru in 1939, who went into puberty extremely young. The father of her baby is unknown. Her parents thought she had a tumor and took her to the hospital.

There was also a six year old girl in the Ukraine that give birth to a child fathered by her grandfather, but the baby was stillborn in 1934.

A girl belonging to the harem of Chief Akkiri in Nigeria gave birth at the age of 8 years old. Her daughter became pregnant and gave birth at a young age also, making her a grandmother at the age of 17 years old.

It is a good idea for Elena's mother to keep her in Spain and away from her love interest to avoid another baby. The family can barely afford the mouths they have to feed at the moment.
