10 New Year's Day Activities: From Skiing to Baking to Football

Jan S
New Year's Day is a time for watching football, parades, nursing hangovers, sleeping in and eating. Every family has its own special way of enjoying the day. If you don't have a clue of what to do on New Year's Day, here are 10 ideas:

Of course, topping the list is sleeping in, but for those itching to do something, there is more to life than sleeping.

Go to a movie, with all the new great holiday releases you are sure to find something you like and of course take a friend to enjoy it with.
Watch the Rose Bowl Parade while still in your PJ's.

Get the family together for your own football game outside, if it is snowing then count on more fun playing the game in the snow.

If there is snow go out and play in it, build a snowman or sled downhill.

A skiing buff? You'll be on the slopes that day I'll bet.

Bake cookies and cakes. It is a great time to get all the kids together and have a family baking session.

If you are in the milder climates plan a group bike ride around the neighborhood or out on the country roads. The kids will have a chance to use their new bikes they got for Christmas.

Watching football. This is what most men will be doing on New Years day, they don't care who is playing either.

Cooking the New Year's day dinner. You should be cooking the traditional pork or ham for good luck. Remember the old saying "pigs move forward and chickens move back", meaning if you want to have good luck in the New Year you eat pork or ham. Eating poultry on New Years day is thought to bring bad luck. Cabbage served with the meal is said to bring money to you in the New Year.

If you haven't done it by now, make your New Years resolution list. While you are at it get the whole family together and make a family list for the New Year. Think of it as more of a goal than a list. Put on it where you plan to spend vacation this year or if as a family you plan on getting a new pet, what kind of pet and when to acquire it. Lots of things can go on a family New Year's resolution list.

There you have it a list of some ideas for New Year's Day.
