1000 Acres Ranch Resort in Stony Creek, New York

A Fun Dude Ranch on the Banks of the Hudson River

Abby Greenhill
You don't have to head west to find a dude ranch. 1000 Acres Ranch Resort is located at 465 Warrensburg Road, Stony Creek , New York. It is approximately 30 minutes from Lake George. 1000 Acres has all the elements of what you would expect and more. My husband surprised me with a long weekend at 1000 Acres Ranch Resort one year. He didn't tell me much about the place, he wanted to surprise me. I'm a city girl and wasn't prepared for a dude ranch. I didn't understand why I had to buy a pair of cowboy boots before we went!

1000 Acres has been around since 1942 and is still owned and operated by the same family, the Arehart's. Though they started out small and oriented more for 'singles', they now accommodate 250 guests a night and the ranch is extremely family oriented. For more information on the history and old photos of the ranch - click here.

When it comes to accommodations, 1000 Acres Ranch Resort has a variety of cabin styles and bed sizes. There is also a 'motel style' unit. All rooms have a/c and a private bath. For more information on rooms - click here.

Prices vary depending on room size and package you purchase and whether you want to include riding (horse back riding that is!) or not. There are too many combinations of room and rides or room and no rides that it is impossible to list them all for you. There are specials, such as buy 6 nights get the 7th for free. Cribs and roll-away beds are available. They do have a minimum two night stay. If you want more complete details on pricing - click here.

There are three meals provided daily. If you have any dietary requirements, let them know ahead of time. Breakfast is a full breakfast served family style in the dining room. Lunch and dinner are either served in the dining room family style or an outdoor cookout on certain days.

Needless to say, horseback riding is one of the main reasons for gong to a dude ranch. They have trails through the beautiful Adirondacks and they are geared to beginners or more advanced riders. We took the beginners course because I was a little nervous. At one point my horse tripped and went down on one knee and I hung on for dear life and received a round of applause!

Other activities include golf, or you can take a rowboat ride on the Hudson. Try your luck at fishing or just sit and relax on the banks of the river. There are three swimming pools to enjoy, one is an indoor pool. There are cocktail parties in the evenings, so put your cowboys boots on and try a line dance or two. Since you are assigned to a dinner table, you will get to know people and share your experiences at 1000 Acres Ranch Resort.

Their website is chock full of information to help you decide what kind of room you need and whether you want to 'ride' or not. It's a great place for the family. The kids can run and play without worry. They accept reservations by phone. Just in case you and your laptop cannot be separated, they have free wireless internet.

Check out their website; decide if this is the year you visit a dude ranch. Give them a call, ask questions, find out about special and packages and then make your reservations. 1000 Acres Dude Ranch, Stony Creek, New York - for vacation memories that will live in your heart forever.

Sounds like a fun place to stay! We stayed at a Dude Ranch near Hot Springs, Arkansas for a Sister Weekend a couple of years ago--that was a wonderful experience!

Horsebacking riding through the Adirondacks sounds like a lot of fun.

Hey, that's not so far away from us it's not doable! Ron would love that, but he'd never want to go riding with a guide. He was a jockey as a youth and thinks he's a horse expert!
