I like to read self-improvement books as much as I can to increase my personal capacity and also to better my productivity. This book by Suzy Welch is not only a fun and easy read, it has honestly began changing the decisions I make on a daily basis and helping me to prioritize my "A" work from "B" work a lot easier. There are so many choices we make every day that lead us on a path of success or bypass us to a place we'd rather not be. Suzy's 10-10-10 decision making approach is easy to remember and makes a ton of sense.

Basically, whenever you have a decision to make you decide what the consequences of the decision will be in the next 10 minutes, 10 months, and 10 years. For most of us we often look for the easy choice that takes the pain away of the next 10 minutes. Most of the time this choice is the one that is only easy for the moment and can affect us negatively in the next year or ten. An example for me is with my kids. I absolutely HATE crying. It gets on my nerves and makes me want to go into hiding. My children of course know this about me and use it to their advantage. Every time I give in to the crying it saves my sanity for the next 10 minutes, but of course in the next 10 months or 10 years I've done my kids a disservice by not suffering through my own pain. In their life they'll never learn patience, how to treat others, and basically that to get your way you need to do something that gets a negative reaction. They won't last a minute in the real world with those qualities and no one will want to be around them either.

In business I know that there are lots of times I want to cancel an appointment, take the shortcut on an application, or not to do the due diligence necessary to make sure the business gets in on time and done right the first time. Saving that pain for the short term has caused me many a do over in the long run and I'm sure has tainted my reputation for being detail oriented.
