10-Year-Old Girl is New Mom; A Romanian Girl Has Given Birth in Spain, Meaning She was Pregnant at 9

Children Having Children is an Addage Often Used Toward Teens; This Time the Child Mom is 10

When real 10-year-old girls start having babies, it truly is a matter of children having children!

We have heard over and over again that it is such a bad thing when "children are having children." This statement usually is used to describe a teenage girl getting pregnant or giving birth while still in high school.

The fact is that teenage mothers are sexually mature and, from a physiological standpoint, not children at all.

This story is different, though. A 10-year-old Romanian girl has given birth to a baby in Spain. Throughout Spain and Romania, the news has been spreading at the speed of light thanks to the media and Internet.

The point is that this 10-year-old girl, whose identity is being kept secret to protect her, must have gotten pregnant when she was 9 years old.

According to reports, the father of the newborn is a 13-year-old boy who is no longer "in the picture." The mother of the girl, who is a Romanian Gypsy, doesn't seem to think that any of this is a big deal or unusual in the least. The fact that her 9-year-old daughter was having sex, and nine months later, that same, now-10-year-old daughter gave birth seems like it is almost commonplace.

It is unclear if any charges will be filed against the 30-something-year-old mother of the unidentified boy-father.

Believe it or not, this new mom from Romania is not the record holder for being the youngest new mother. That honor belongs to Lina Medina, a Mexican girl who gave birth at the age of 5 back in the 1940s.

What any of this means in the European nations is unclear. Will the European Union get involved in setting a minimum age of consent? Does the EU even have the power to dictate such a law?

Nothing is clear right now with the exception that a 10-year-old girl has given birth to a baby in Spain. The ramifications and everything else are still anybody's guess.

A 10 year old Romanian Gypsy gave birth recently in Spain. This news spreads like wildfire in the country, but the new mother's age is not the biggest issue here. People are criticizing how the mother of the 10 year old kid reacted to the pregnancy.

The poor kids! For the mom to be sexually abused and give birth so young is tragic. It's hard to imagine what kind of life the baby will have. I know cultural norms are different in other countries but age 10? Let's be real.

sad and scary, thankfully my 10 year old boy just figured out that he likes talking to girls. he wants to play cards and legos not let's make a baby.

There are ages of consent in European Union countries, Rob. For example, in the UK the age of consent is 16. I don't know what it is in Romania or Spain. I heard about this story the other day, but as you mentioned, this young girl is not the youngest. Aside from the youngest girl Lina Media who gave birth, I remember a 9-year-old girl giving birth when I was about her age. I can still remember the newspaper cutout that was displayed for all to see in my middle school.

While there are always cultural variables in what is considered what we like to call "within normal limits", this one strains the brain (and moral tolerances) of most people.

Miilah, I would tend to agree. 10 Year Old Girls having babies is just wrong on so many levels that it's hard to figure where to start.
