The Dead (1987): Director John Huston's final film is a haunting adaptation of James Joyce's most famous short story. It's a lot easier than reading "Ulysses," but this Irish movie still feels authentic as Anjelica Huston remembers a lost love.
My Left Foot (1989): Get inspired by the real-life story of writer Christy Brown who overcame cerebral palsy by learning to communicate using just his left foot. Daniel Day-Lewis won an Oscar for his performance.
The Secret of Kells (2009): Get introduced to the Book of Kells or show it to your kids with this ravishing animated Irish film. A 12-year old boy protects the famous manuscript when Vikings attack the abbey.
Waking Ned Devine (1998): Laugh along as two eccentrics in the tiny village of Tullymore try to impersonate a dead neighbor to collect his lottery winnings.
The Commitments (1991): The soundtrack is the main attraction as a poor band in Dublin plays American soul music but finds life was better before they climbed to the top.
The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006): Like Victor Hugo said, all wars are civil wars because all men are brothers. This winner of the Cannes Film Festival's Palme d'Or shows two brothers torn apart by war.
The General (1998): The strange but true story of gangster Martin Cahill is like an Irish "Sopranos" with art theft, the IRA, and bigamy thrown in.
In the Name of the Father (1993): Seven Oscar nominations and an all star cast of Daniel Day-Lewis, Emma Thompson, and the late Pete Postlethwaite are two good reasons to watch this top Irish movie of an Irishman wrongly sentenced for life after an IRA bombing.
The Crying Game (1992): Even when you already know the surprise ending, this story of boy meets girl sort of is still engaging.
Michael Collins (1996): Liam Neeson embodies the "Lion of Ireland" who rose as an IRA leader and fell when his detractors thought his Irish Free State betrayed the cause of independence.
Magdalene Sisters (2002): Slavery never ended for the women sentenced to work in Catholic laundries for sins like getting raped or looking too attractive.

I've always felt that "Ulysses" (1967) was surprisingly good. If you can find the almost impossible to find "Scenes from Finnegans Wake," I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. They were honest, calling it "Scenes from..." because no one could film that book. Another great Irish-themed film is John Wayne's "The Quiet Man." [From James Joyce to John Wayne...?]
