12 Days of Being a Temp: Part 2 (days 5-8)
Observations and Musings About the Business Culture that I've Been Thrust Into
Lexmark is my favorite computer company ever.
Not because of superior quality (I'm a fan of Japanese brands myself), not because of ridiculously cheap pricing (they're mid range), and not because of overly friendly sales reps (I've never talked to one). No, Lexmark is my new favorite technology supplier for one reason:
They paid for Boston Market to cater our lunches today. This they feel, will make our sales reps try to sell there products more often, and to build a trust, and a liking, for there brand. Not a bad business model i must say, but here's the best part.
I'm not in sales! I'm using a Multi million dollar company for food, and i never have to do anything more about it!
Remember those old Columbia House CD buying deals, in the mail, where you "buy 1 get 10- free!" and then in small print there's the contract that says you have to buy 10 more over the course of the next month? well this is like that, but WITH NO CONTRACT.
So thank you Lexmark, for the delicious mac and cheese, the average chicken, the fresh salad, the awesome bread and the cookies. You're the best
Day 6:
First and foremost, i would like to apologize for my inappropriate behavior regarding Lexmark yesterday. It has come to my attention that it may have seemed bias, and it may have seemed, to some, that i was being bought with food, by the Lexmark Corporation.
Let me clarify, i am in no way saying that lexmark is the best, and this has nothing to do with the fact the MicroMicr was the one who catered our lunches today (Lexmark was yesterday). Nothing at all to do with that. I am just saying that lexmark is a fairly above average product, but not the greatest.
Now, i must say, on a completely unrelated subject, that Micromicr products are far and above the best available. There reliability, durability, blah blah blah. They were great turkey sandwiches.
Also today, they decided to double, yes double, my workload. I am not exaggerating. So when i came back from lunch, until now (3 hours) i believe this is the first time Ive been able to breathe. When i meet the genius who thought of this great concept, they will be getting hit in the face.
Maybe with a turkey sand which.
Day 7:
So they got me today. The birthday police, that is. I walk in and my desk is covered in not only the regular birthday garb, but especially hilarious touches such as "40 magnificent years!" (i, myself, being in my mid 20's). But after the initial walk in, it wasn't so bad. Except the occasional worker who would walk by, and not knowing me, the following conversation would occur:
"Wow, you're 40? No way, you look really good for your age, seriously"
Me: " Yeah, I'll tell you, lots of vitamins, water and exercise, thats the key"
And whereas the people who sit around me would be holding back from laughing, the unknown co-worker would walk away, thoroughly impressed that i look 15 years younger than 40.
My favorite part is my hope that they would then go to their respective areas of the building, and start up about a conversation about a guy they just say celebrating his 40th birthday, and man, he sure looks a lot younger than 40.
Sometimes this job isn't so bad after all.
DAY 8:
The thing:
Being switched from group to group has definitely made me realize something about group dynamics. "The Thing"
Every group seems to need a thing. The current groups thing is that the guy next to me just got married, and his wife also works here. So now every time he has to do some something, everyone in this group asks him things like "oh, did you get permission from your wife". Let alone the constant barge of "man i told you not to!" and etc etc.
Its not that the people in the group don't like her, quite the contrary, everyone seems to like her very much, its just that whatever the old "thing" must have run its course, so this is the new one.
I cant wait until its my turn for a "thing", although it usually seems to concentrate within 1 or two people within the group (in this case, the group is about 8 people). so it looks like i might not get a "thing" anytime soon, and if its not soon, its not happening, because, tada! I'm being moved in another month or so.
Woo!
