2008 will mark the first year of the One Laptop per Child project. One Laptop per Child will be giving laptops to children in other countries to include South America, South East Asia and Africa. The new style laptops will be known to many as the "green machines" and cost $200. Which includes the rechargeable battery, AC adapter, solar power connector, hand-crank, pull cord and foot pedal.

Tesla's Electric Roadster will be one of the most sought after sports vehicles of 2008. That is, if you can afford it. The 2008 Tesla Electric Roadster will be sold for nearly $100,000. Not bad for a fully electric car that can go from 0-60 in 4 seconds.

The Chandrayaan-1, the first unmanned spacecraft designed to orbit the moon will conduct research on the moon and create a 3-D image of its surface. India plans to launch the CHandrayaan-1 in April of 2008.

Alaska Airlines will be releasing the first ever Web-enabled airplane. They will allow satellites to be linked on board WI-FI.
Anticipated Science and Technology breakthroughs of 2008 #5 - KSTAR to Test 18 Million Degree F Plasma
The Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research project will created plasmas that get as hot as 18 million degrees Fahrenheit. The plasmas are used to generate energy from Fusion. The tests are used to provide data to the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor.

2008 is the year that New York City food vendors must eliminate artificial trans fat foods from their menu. The regulation was passed in 2006 and required to go in effect in 2008. Some of the foods are those that contain Margarine and partially hydrogenated vegetable oil.

The Planck Satellite, a creation of European Space Agency, will be launched some time in July of 2008. It will be used to estimate the age of the universe and check for other theories as well.

NASA will spend a massive $900-million to repair the Hubble Space Telescope. NASA will make several repairs to include the Hubble getting new gyroscopes, batteries, a camera and a grapple interface that an Orion spaceship will use when it comes to safely deorbit the satellite.

The Kavli Foundation is the newest addition to the Science Awards. Much Like the Nobel Prize, the Kavli Foundation out of California will begin awarding $1-million biennial prizes to the scientists working in astrophysics, nanoscience and neuroscience.

Richard Garriott, computer-game creator and member of the Space Adventures board, will be going in to space. Garriott will be the 6th cosmic tourist sent in to space by the company. Garriott says he hopes to take the first0ever civilian space walk which would cost a mere $45 million- a lot more then Garriott's father, Owen K. Garriott, who is an astronaut.

One of the most impressive pieces of technology to hit the shelves in 2008 will be the new piece of hardware that is used as a game controller. What makes this game controller so unique is its ability to be controlled by brain waves. The controller is a full head piece that can be worn with nearly censors built in.

2008 is officially the year the poop will be made into power. Plants in Iowa and California will begin producing energy using livestock manure. The manure will given of methane which will be used to create energy.

Great article! These technology breakthroughs are truly something to anticipate. I have a question you might be able to help me with though: the "One Laptop per Child", can regular people by those? I'll be spending significant time in Africa soon, and probably without steady electricity. I'd love to be able to buy one of those laptops. Let me know of any links where I can find more info.
