12 Ideas to Help You Embrace Life

How to Live, and Not Just Exist

Cindy Leggett
In today's fast paced world, almost everyone is guilty of racing through life. It is almost as if humanity is on autopilot. People go through the motions of day to day living month after month, year after year, without ever having really done anything more than the usual mundane tasks that make each day seem almost exactly like the one before it. If you seriously want to enjoy your life and live it to the fullest, instead of merely existing, you must break free from the rat race of your daily routine and embrace all that life has to offer. There are so many ways to do this - almost as many ways as there are people - and what works for one person will not necessarily work for another. You owe it to yourself to find your own personal combination of ideas to make your world change from black and white to glorious Technicolor! Below is a list of ideas, certainly not all-inclusive, but enough to get you started and remind you that the world is waiting for you.

1. Love. Who doesn't remember how it feels to be in love? Wouldn't it be great if you could always feel this way? Your brain releases chemicals when you are in love, which stimulate the brain's pleasure center. One of the side effects of these chemicals is an intense feeling of excitement. So, fall in love! If you already have a partner, fall in love with them all over again, and brighten your world! Love doesn't always have to be romantic, either. You can get the same feeling from loving friends or family members. Love your neighbor... and love yourself! Try to open your heart to others - give and receive unconditional love. Love really can make the world go 'round in a wonderful way.

2. Discover. What is really important to you? What five things are the most important in your life right now? Concentrate on these, and try to minimize the time spent on anything else that's happening in order to focus on what really matters to you.

3. Take a Chance. Don't live your life always worrying about what will happen tomorrow, next week, next year. Be bold, and step out in faith, believing that you are capable of whatever you set out to do. Do you hate your job? Start making plans to find another position you are better suited for, or go into business for yourself! Is there someone in your life you'd like to get to know better? Don't be shy - ask them out! Ask yourself what you really want, then take a chance and find a way to make it happen. Face any doubts you may have, anything that may be holding you back from where you really want to be in life, and find a way to conquer them.

4. Find Your Passion. What really excites you? What can you get totally immersed in for hours at a time? Is there any way you could make your living this way? If not, make it your hobby! Everyone needs at least one passion in life to add a little spice to the mixture!

5. Go Outside. When was the last time you ever really looked at the sky? The trees? When did you last walk barefoot through the grass, or across a sandy beach? We are so busy with our indoor lives that we seldom take the time to savor the wonders of nature. Take the time to watch the sunset every day. Stop and enjoy the stress relief that's available right outside your door. It is a welcome change, and one you will come to appreciate the more you do it.

6. Unplug. We spend far too much time in front of the computer, the television, or plugged into an iPod. Some of it is necessary, of course, but try to use your precious time more wisely. There's a whole world out there waiting for you - get out there and see it!

7. Exercise. You would be amazed at how much more alive you will feel with regular exercise! Sluggish blood circulation can leave you tired and complacent. Get up and get out - take a walk, jog, bicycle - the choice is yours. Any activity is better than none, and exercise can have a boomerang effect. Once you get started, you'll want to continue!

8. Think About Food. We have so many wonderful food choices available, yet many of us are caught in a rut, eating the same foods over and over. When you do this, you are missing one of the great joys of life. Experiment with the foods of different cultures. Embrace all the natural foods at your grocery store - you'll be astonished at how many you've never tried. Try to eat as many different colors of foods as you can. Savor every bite - enjoy the textures and flavors.

9. Think Positive. Rid yourself of any negative thoughts. Any time you feel like complaining, stop and smell the roses. Be thankful for what you have. Don't allow self-doubt to take center stage. You can do anything you want to do!

10. Slow Down! Life goes by so fast. Most Americans stay stressed out, and suffer from a chronic lack of sleep in order to keep up the pace. This is so unhealthy, and affects productivity and happiness. Take your time as you go through your day. Enjoy the moment! Whenever possible, take some time during the day to do nothing. That's right - absolutely nothing! Take a short nap if you need it. Or, just enjoy the silence. Turn off the television, the radio, and listen to your inner voice. It's there, and you may be surprised at what it has to say.

11. Laugh - and Cry. Laughter truly is the best medicine. It is a stress reliever, and has been scientifically proven to boost your immune system in a very positive way. Watch funny movies. Tell jokes. See the humor in life! Crying is a wonderful emotional release that is very cleansing. Don't hold back those tears - cry when you need to. You'll feel better.

12. Be Different. Try something new every day. Look for different experiences that are out of your comfort zone. You may find that it's something you want to keep in your life. Change up your routine, and look at your everyday tasks from a new perspective. When you do things differently, you may do them even better and more efficiently.

I feel like this a lot. Life is too fast. Even so, I always find a moment to look at the sky everyday. I mean really look, and watch the sky.
