13th Annual Spoonbread Festival in Berea, Kentucky is Set for Sept. 18-20, 2009
Jefferson Street, Memorial Park, Berea, Kentucky
Berea, KY 40405
United States of America
Spoonbread is a type of corn meal that is light, fluffy, and rich with eggs and sugar. You eat it with a spoon, hence the name. Spoonbread has been a staple of Appalachian foods for over a hundred years and you can try a sample, purchase large sizes, and even buy recipe books to make your own spoonbread while you're at the event.
The festival kicks off at 3:00pm on the 18th with an opening ceremony at Memorial Park on Jefferson Street. With over 90 exhibitors and booths set up, you'll be sure to find something that suits you or even just have fun looking. Performances from musicians, cloggers, and magicians will take the stage for the duration of the entire event.
For kids, free inflatable rides will be set up for the weekend. Magician Mark Comley will perform on the 19th at 7pm and on the 20th 5pm and 7:30pm. Classic Midway amusement rides and games will be on site for the weekend. Laser Tag will be available all weekend inside the Acton Folk Center, across the street from Memorial Park. Tethered hot air balloon rides on the 19th are located at Berea Community School, just a couple of blocks away from the park.
For adults, the Antique Engine and Tractor Show will be set up in the Acton Folk Center Parking Lot on Friday and Saturday. A Corn Hole Tournament will take place at Memorial Park on Saturday and Sunday.
If the weather conditions permit, the Hot Air Balloon Glow is something you don't want to miss. On the 18th at 8:00pm, Hot Air Balloons will light up the sky with amazing colors. Bring your chairs and blankets to the Berea Community School Lawn for a truly unforgettable event. Glades Christian Church Youth Group will be selling food and drinks at the show.
On Friday the 18th, the festival is open from 3:00pm until after 8:00pm when the Hot Air Balloon Glow is over. On Saturday the 19th, a pancake breakfast at the Methodist Church at 101 Fee Street starts the day at 6:00am and the festival closes at 8:00pm. On Sunday the 20th, all the booths re-open at noon and the festival ends at 5:00pm.
