14 Easy and Inexpensive Halloween Costume Ideas for Couples

Sandra Knasiak
Selecting a couples costume to wear with your significant other is a fun and memorable way to celebrate Halloween. Forget the over-priced, cheesy costumes in the stores. They are played out and not worth the money. With a little creativity and imagination, you can create your own unique Haloween couples costumes for a fraction of the price. Here are fourteen ideas for easy and inexpensive costumes.

1. Adam & Eve - This classic duo is easy to recreate with some basic materials. All that is required for this couples costume is some plastic greenery to cover certain body parts and of course, an apple. You can also put the greeney on your head like a halo. If it is cold where you live or you don't want to show off that much skin, consider wearing a nude bodysuit.

2. Elderly couple - A friend of mine and her boyfriend won big money in a Halloween costume contest with this clever yet simple idea. Grab a couple of wigs, and throw on some old people clothes. Think of Mama from Mama's Family as an example. To make it even funnier, stuff your costumes with pillows and wear a cane.

3. Gilligan and Mary Ann from Gilligan's Island - It won't take much to pull this one off. For Gilligan, simply find a white sailor's hat, a pair of jeans and a red long sleeved polo shirt. For Mary Ann, put your hair in low pigtails and wear a pair of super short denim shorts and a red top with an exposed midriff. Or, if you are so brave, don the yellow bikini!

4. John McCain & Sarah Palin - I'm sure there will be lots of Sarah Palin costumes this year. There was so much attention given to her (and Tina Fey), it is no wonder why people will want to consider being her for Halloween. It wouldn't be hard at all. Simply find a nice fitting skirt suit and purchase a cheap pair of reading glasses from the drugstore. You may or may not need a wig depending on what type of hair you have. Using a clip, twist your into a bun and secure with bobby pins. Don't forget the makeup. Be sure to apply lots of blush. Match her lip color identically with this insider's tip. Recently, Sarah Palin's make-up artist revealed her exact lip color, Loreal Automatic Lip Pencil in Nudes with a top coat of clear gloss. Finish off the look with an American flag pin and/or a Miss Alaska sash.

5. Sarah Palin & Joe the Plumber - Follow the instructions above to accomplish Sarah Palin's look. For Joe the Plumber, all that is necessary are jeans, a plain black tee or flannel, and a bald head. Use a plunger for a fun prop.

6. Sarah Palin & The Moose - Remember the hilarious Saturday Night Live skit with Sarah Palin and the moose? Keep the laughs coming with this humorous costume. Follow the instructions for Sarah above. A simple way to create your own moose costume is to wear a brown velour jumpsuit and throw on some antlers. You can make your own antlers using brown felt and wire coat hangers.

7. Biker Couple - All you will need are boots, jeans, a Harley Davidson tee shirt, fake tattoos, and a do-rag. Anything leather that you have would be perfect to add to this ensemble. Consider using helmets as props if you can get your hands on them for cheap.

8. Johnny Cash & June Carter - For Johnny, just wear black boots, black pants, a black shirt and a black blazer. Just make sure you get the hair right, you might need a wig. For June's costume, there are several looks to choose from. I suggest doing a Google image search and see what you like best. If you really want people to know who you are, you could each carry a cheap toy guitar.

9. "Trailer Trash" Couple - Grab a flannel shirt or wife beater, dirty, grease-stained jeans, and a trucker's hat or better yet, a mullet wig. Carry a can of beer and a can of Skoal. You might even consider adding some temporary tattoos. For the wife, you could dress in daisy dukes and a flannel or throw on a robe, slippers, and put curlers in your hair.

10. Drew Carey & Mimi from the Drew Carey Show - You're going to need lots of make up for this one. For Mimi, wear the brightest, most obnixous outfit you can find. Cake on a ton of makeup going extremely heavy on the eyes. For Drew, wear a Cleveland Brown shirt or flannel with jeans. Or you can choose a suit if you prefer that. Just don't forget the signature thick, black, regtangular glasses.

11. Hugh Hefner & Playboy Bunny - Find a red satin robe, slippers and a maybe a cigar for Hef. To recreate the Playboy Bunny look, wear a black leotard with black fishnet stockings and heels. Throw on some bunny ears, a bowtie, and don't forget a furry, cotton tail.

12. Danny & Sandy from Grease - You will need to decide if you want to be the good or bad versions of each character. If you choose to do both "bad" versions, that would probably be the easiest to recreate. For Danny, wear black jeans/pants and a white tee shirt. Roll up a pack of cigarettes in the sleeve for an extra touch. Pay special attention to the hair as it is vital to the Danny look. Top of the look by donning a leather jaket. For Sandy, dress in skin tight black pants with a black top, black heels and bright red lipstick. Use a cigarette for a prop.

13. Princess Leia & Han Solo - If you have long enough hair, you won't need a wig to accomplish the cinnamon bun hairstyle. Throw on a white flowing dress and add a large, fake gun and you're good to go. For Hans Solo, all you will need is black pants, a long sleeve white shirt, a black vest, a big gun and holster.

14. Joe Dirt & Brandy - You will definitely need a mullet wig to pull this one off. Other than that, this costume won't require much more. For Joe, just use some worn out, old jeans and a flannel shirt with the sleeves ripped off. Or, you could go for the AC/DC shirt and overalls look. Oh, and you musn't forget the giant sideburns. For an awesome prop, find or borrow a little red wagon and create you own For Brandy, a pair daisy dukes, a tank top and some boots.
