14 Signs and Symptoms of Depression

Depression is a problem that can occur in any person at anytime. It isn't like a regular disease where there are specific external signs or symptoms. The symptoms of depression are more to do with the personality, the lifestyle and the behavior of a person. It is very important not to ignore any sign of depression as it could worsen the situation and lead to severe depression.

A depressed person can be easily spotted amongst a group of people. A depressed person would normally have one or more of the following changes in their day to day life.

  • Insomnia or lack of sleep is the most common symptom of depression. Due to the disturbed state of mind a depressed person is unable to sleep well. They wither don't fall asleep or have very disturbed sleep patterns.
  • A person who is depressed may either being an insomniac or end up sleeping too much.
  • A person in this state of mind usually does not like to talk much; they hesitate in meeting people or participating in discussions. They like keeping to themselves. They become abnormally very quiet.
  • Low self esteem is another symptom of depression. A depressed person tends to feel inferior to the others. They feel low in esteem and unworthy. They blame themselves for everything.
  • Positivity is lost when a person feels depressed. The basic approach towards anything in life becomes pessimistic as they have lost all hope and conviction in life.
  • A depressed person feels very helpless and dejected with life. They feel emptiness from within, a very hollow inner self.
  • Losing of interest in activities that they normally loved to do. Inability to concentrate on any task. They don't find pleasure in any activity.
  • Have a very sad or gloomy look on their face. They forget to smile for days together and are quiet and lost in their own thoughts.
  • When a person is depressed they have a tendency to be prone to crying. There need not be any specific reason to do so., since they are disturbed they end up crying many times during the day because of their sadness.
  • Due to the constant pressure on the brain during depression and too much thinking a person ends up being tired and with very low energy. They feel high levels of fatigue doing normal say to day activities.
  • They also may suffer from constant pain the head, neck or tensions in the muscles. Constant thinking leads to all these problems in the body.
  • A person who is his lost in his own thoughts doesn't like to be disturbed, hence they tend to get irritated very easily and lose their control and anger over petty issues.
  • Change in the food habits is also a very distinguishing symptom. They lose interest in food and tend to make excuses to skip their meals, or eat very less resulting in a weight loss.
  • Due to the depression they tend to become more suicidal, they think of death as an easy way to get rid of this problem.
