15 Games & Activities for Even & Odd Number Math
Hands on Activites Help Kids Get a Handle on Even and Odd Number Math
Find even and odd numbers throughout the day.
1. Count when you go up any staircase. How many steps were there? Is that an even or odd number?
2. What time does that clock say? O.K., if it's 9:52 the hour an even or odd number? Are the minutes an even or odd number?
3. How many guests are we having for dinner or add our party? Is this an even or odd number?
4. If you're going on an elevator and you need to go the 7th floor, is that an odd or an even number?
5. Measure things will a ruler. How many inches long is your toothbrush? Is that an odd or an even number?
6. Look at the calendar. If today is the 22nd, is this an even or odd number?
7. Look at the price tags on items you are shopping for. Is $2.50 even or odd? What if we bought two of those? How much would that be? Is that new total even or odd?
8. Put three treats like cookies or candies on a plate and tell your child that the two of you should share them. Is this an even number? How many cookies would you need to be able to share them equally?
9. Count the number of people in your family. Is there an odd or even number living in your home?
10. Count the number of rooms in your home. Do you have an even or odd number of rooms in your house?
11. Kids love to talk about birthdays. Which day of the month is their birthday? Is it even or odd? Go through the whole families' list of birthdates. They'll have a lot of fun separating the evens and odds in your family and they will remember these numbers on tests and homework because it's personal to them.
Simple games can practice even and odd and are more fun than worksheets too.
12. Find a pair of dice from any game. In just five minutes you can review even and odd numbers 2 through 12 dozens of times and you'll be reviewing basic addition at the same time.
13. For a quick family fun game pull out a deck of cards and remove the face cards. Divide and shuffle the deck and play slap. Have your child identify each card as even or odd. To make it competitive, let them choose even or odd at the beginning and keep and all the cards that are odd (or even) to see who wins.
Get moving with even and odd math.
Kids love and need lots of movement and active play is another fun way to practice identifying even and odd numbers.
14. Try reciting chants of even and odd numbers while kids are on the swings. With every push or pump on the swing, count by twos. First count with even numbers and then with odd numbers.
15. Count by even and then odd numbers while throwing a ball back and forth for some movement math.
