Or maybe we're just trying to get more bang for our bucks, whatever the reason, it seems to work on quite a few of the items we purchase for our everyday use.
And the most innovative of us all are our kids. If you've ever noticed them when they play... they can take the most common item in the house and turn it into a toy.
As for me... when I was a child I would use my old toothbrush as a brush for my doll's hair, and for this article, we're going to explore 15 ways to use a toothbrush. Some of the ways may be obvious and some may not, and on some you may want to use a new toothbrush, and on some it doesn't matter.
Clean Finger Nails and Toenails:
This is the most common use for old or new toothbrushes. It may not replace the fingernail brush cleaner we're all use to, but it makes a fantastic substitute, and it can clean under you fingernails and toenails just as good.
Clean Grout:
I think this is the second most common use for your toothbrush, and a lot of people use this method. It's easy to get to the grout line so you can give them a good cleaning.
Personally I find this way a little time consuming, but if this is your style, then go for it.
Grooming Mustaches and Beards:
This speaks for itself. If you don't have the special grooming kit for your mustache and beard, then a toothbrush is the next best thing. It's small enough, and probably cheaper too.
Grooming Eyebrows:
Okay ladies, I wouldn't leave you out! And using a toothbrush to groom your eyebrows is a wonderful idea. In fact, this is all I use now.
Clean Your Food Grater:
Again, this is a wonderful idea. Some warm, soapy water and a toothbrush will clean your grater better than just washing it by hand or in the dishwasher. The toothbrush bristles can get into places your sponge or dish rag can't.
Clean Appliance Vents:
These are vents on your small appliances. And again, your toothbrush can do a much better job of removing dust and grime because the bristles can reach in between the vents, and a dust cloth or feather duster can't.
I've used it to clean the speaker vents on my TV's, the vents on my modem, computer, DVD player and the vent over the microwave that's mounted over the stove.
Clean Your Keyboard:
It does a fast and beautiful job of getting in between the keys and removing all the dust and grime.
Clean Your Silver:
If you've got any item made of silver, and it's got grooves and crevices... then a toothbrush makes an excellent cleaning tool. It can get the silver polish into these places where a cleaning cloth can't.
Clean Car Battery Terminals:
Using a toothbrush beats using a nail file, which is what a boyfriend of mind did, and totally ruined my file. But anyway, you can make a paste with baking soda and water, then use this and the toothbrush to clean your encrusted battery terminals.
I've also used a toothbrush to clean off any terminals or connections that were corroded and encrusted.
Clean Your Comb:
If you don't use a hair brush, this is a very good way to clean your comb. Warm, soapy water and the toothbrush will clean in between the teeth of your comb.
Clean Can Opener:
It doesn't matter if you're cleaning your electric can opener or the manual can opener. A toothbrush can clean both. For your electric can opener, you're cleaning the blade with alcohol and for the manual can opener... you can use warm, soapy water. Again the toothbrush bristles can get where your sponge can't.
Clean Motors:
A little mineral spirits or kerosene will get rid of all the gunk build up in the crevices of any motor. It's a messy job, but it works.
Clean Your Plants And Flowers:
Artificial plants and flowers, that is. Use warm, soapy water and a toothbrush to clean the dust and grime from your plants and flowers.
Stakes For Plants:
Your small plants that need support while growing can be supported by the handle of a toothbrush. The handles make wonderful stakes because they are sturdy and don't wear down.
Create A Work Of Art:
I know you're probably wondering, what in world does a toothbrush have to do with creating a work of art. Well, it's called spatter painting, and you can create your own painting with a toothbrush!
The items you will need is a small cardboard box, a piece of paper the size you want your painting to be, metal screening, flowers, leaves or a stencil you like, large rubber band, paint and your toothbrush.
1. Put the paper inside the cardboard box.
2. Arrange the stencil, or the leaves, or the flowers, or all of them on the paper, in a style that you like.
3. Secure the metal screening over the cardboard box with the rubber band.
4. Dip the toothbrush into the paint and rub gently over the metal screening.
The paint will spatter onto the paper while leaving the outline of the objects you placed on it. Let your piece of art dry, then you can frame and hang it. This can be done with all types of leaves, flowers or objects you love.
I hope 15 ways to use a toothbrush was helpful and informative, but a side note before I leave. Statistics show that 80% of the people use their toothbrushes until the bristles are so worn, they can no longer clean your teeth.
Hopefully you won't keep yours that long, and don't throw them away, because they will come in handy one day.
