17 Year Old Elizabeth Arroyo-Carrillo is Killed in Rollover Accident

Driver Carried 4 Occupants Age 1 to 20

Elizabeth A. Arroyo-Carrillo, 17, died in a one-car accident at 2 p.m. in Boone County on March 7, 2010. Elizabeth was an occupant riding with 36 year-old Esther A. Corona of Ottumwa, Iowa who was driving a 1998 Plymouth with a total of 4 passengers. The vehicle was headed North on US 63 just south of Peabody Road. The driver attempted to change lanes with another vehicle in the lane she was trying to enter. She nearly sideswiped the other vehicle before she overcorrected and slid into the median. The vehicle overturned several times into the southbound lanes ejecting Elizabeth and another passenger, Antonio I Velasco-Velasco, a 20 year old male also from Ottumwa.

Elizabeth was flown to University Hospital in a fight for her life, but despite efforts of emergency response team, they were unable to save her. She was pronounced dead by Dr. Steven Barnes at 3:39 p.m. Antonio, who was also ejected, was transported to University Hospital by Ambulance in serious condition.

Two children were also occupants in the vehicle when it crashed. Yesinia Corona, 16 year old female and Santiago J. Baeza a one year old male, all from Ottumwa, Iowa. Aside from the one year old who was in a safety seat, all other occupants were reported as not wearing a safety device at the time of the accident. The driver and the children sustained only moderate injuries.
